SoCal Event - Bishop, CA - July 27-28

Just got back to the room. Halfway up Silver Canyon, Portager's t case wasn't happy. We ended up taking the long way back. Got a chance to finally light up my lights on a night run. Looking forward to Wheeler Ridge tomorrow

Not for Wheeler Ridge. No four low

Yep, lost my t-case on Silver canyon before. Also lost it another time on Wheeler ridge. Lets knock on wood and hope we are done with breakdowns.

Mike took like a second or so longer to go from 4lo back to 4hi coming off of Silver. I attributed it to heat or something. Maybe I just need to use 4lo more.

Turning ignition off and restarting seems to help my rig when that happens. But, there is also a GM bulletin about cycling the 4x4 buttons regularly to avoid "sticking".

This trip was so much fun. My truck is back on stock wheels and mostly cleaned up.

Sorry for checking in so late! I got home. unloaded the truck and fell asleep on the couch. Woke-up at 4:00 to eat dinner and went to bed for the night. I guess my body is getting too old to run on four hours of sleep every night.

A special thank you to my buddy Chris in Bishop for helping out with this trip. He was able to find a place for three of us to sleep while having a bunch of people already staying at his house. He has rightly become an official member of the club with a t-shirt and all (just no Hummer). There will be some stories to come out in the trail report later, that is for sure!

We made it home by 9:00 PM last night. I started typing this then but had to finish in the morning.

On the way home, just south of Lone Pine we took a drive up Horseshoe Meadows Road which has some impressive switchbacks as it climbs to 10,000 feet overlooking Owens Lake. Sorry I didn’t get pictures up there, but here is a :link:. It is an incredible view and worth the trip. It was cool, we went from 102F at the Lone Pine visitors center to 77F at the top. Colleen didn't want to go up because the transfer case was broken. The road was paved all the way and the steepest grade was 6 degrees. When we got to the top, we parked next to a Prius. There are camp grounds, hiking trails and equestrian trails up there.

Then we ran into Ridgecrest where it was 106F and we tried to find a Rock Shop that is supposed to be there. The Rock Shop was allusive so we went to Ransburg where the mining activity was amazing.

As Zach mentioned on the night trip up Silver Canyon Road my transfer case went out. It was about half way up when it started clunking every 20 feet. I decided to try and finish the climb because I didn't want to go down without a transfer case. About 3/4 of the way up it gave up completely. I was able to finish the climb in 4 high and first gear thanks to the torque of the V8.

The good news is I was very pleased with my fog lights. The low location allows them to shine under the dust with less glare than roof mounted lights and the yellowish/green light seems to penetrate the dust. They aren’t going to replace real off road lights but they are a great supplement and in dusty conditions like this I think they work better.

I took the T into Tustin Hummer this morning and they just called to tell me it would be finished tomorrow. They tell me that a plastic retainer clip is all that failed and all the noise was just the fork rattling around in there. They said that I could have shut the engine off, switched to 4 wheel low and then started the engine and I would have had 4 wheel low. :wtf2:

This makes no sense since I was 4 low when it failed and it obviously popped out of gear. I’m going to have to have them x-plain this to me tomorrow.

To tell you the truth I would have felt a lot better if they had told me they were replacing the entire transfer case!
