ok, so remind me of why we can't run disconnects on the front, on the H3?

It lowers the "center point" of the shocks to match the lowered axle from the shackles.

http://www.hummer4x4offroad.com/forum/showthread.php?909-H3-Rear-Flex-Mod&highlight=rear+flex+mod

Not sure how it works with the lift you have, I'd assume you've already got a similar modification to match the lifted rear.

IMO, if I could get a custom one made that positions the shock about 1" lower I'd get more out of it. My shock tops out at full extension, and the other side hits the fenderwell, so allowing more down & less up would be ideal.

It's a simple item, so when I get doors made I might just have him make two of these that are 1" longer to accomplish this. A 1" body lift would also do what I'm looking for on the stuffed side, but will raise COG & not fix the lack of extension (aside from by changing the lever point, if you allow the stuff side up more, you'll lever the extended side down more even with the same shock & mounting point). I'm not sure how much more up travel there is to be had as is, could be willing to go 1' above the plastic, could be able to go 4"... won't know till I remove the plastic or change the mounts.

bpe_green.jpg

Pretty simple item to duplicate with some changes... 3 little pieces of metal welded together & a few holes drilled.

One thing I just thought of though, the point where it hits is at the front of the fenderwell, which is the door... so I'm going to pull the rear doors next time & see if I find the top out point. If that eliminates the issue, I might just have to run without rears on the harder stuff for now to avoid the drag.

Btw, next post I'll show how I relocated the swaybar & what I did for the front, I think re-routing the brake line would be a good idea... minor change to the direction where it attaches to the UCA, easy change to eliminate a POSSIBLE future rub issue.

OK, so went out & did a pretty hard run today.

The front only seems to give me about 3-6" of articulation... BUT... for some reason, it's very noticeable on the trail. It bounces me from side to side much less on the hard stuff, and tire spin is notably reduced (main goal I was shooting for)

Main think is as you transition from rock to rock, it keeps the truck from bouncing & lurching as much, so you can maintain a path much better.

Very happy I did both F&R, but the front is more noticeable in how much you get bounced around than the rear it seems.

Last little stretch of trail... almost out...

If you run a lot of rocky terrain.. I highly recommend, if you're on smoother stuff... obviously it's not going to be a terribly helpful thing.

Here's a bit of visual reference...

front & rear disconnected.

Same feature before:

this is the highest I can get the wheel (F) to go up.... looks like it's good that it can't go much further. Maybe I could get away with cutting an inch off the bumper, but that's about it.

Wow you can really see the difference! Do u just disconnect one swaybar end link or both endlinks?

Well, I've been disconnecting one side, but I did find that on a downhill feature with the pass frt tire stuffed the swaybar will hit, so I'm going to pull it the rest of the way. Now I've got to come up with a way to hold the thing up when disconnected though, sure I'll find something.

Pretty interesting how a little more flex changes how I go through some things though... so much smoother & way less spinning. Even just pulling one side makes a big difference. Once I add a locker to this thing I think it's going to really start to shine.

It's fun going out with the heep guys & folks who think the h3 is a joke... then walking up a feature they struggle with, good times :D.

A month ago the driver's rear would have been 2'+ in the air.

I had noticed the bumper wasn't working, but this is the first time I've noticed that it was hitting.

Pull both sides, hang it off the frame above the shock mount & it'll be golden.

... and the joy of wheeling with an 84 yota...

I tow him out about 1/2 the time, pretty normal. The thing runs VERY well on propane, got me thinking about it. (clutch master cyl went today... motor is rock solid.)

I really appreciate the mods you have done. Cheap and very effective offroad.

Seems like your enjoying the hummer a lot

As much as I may whine about the on road performance & a few little quirks... about 3-4 days a week I get out & play with the H3 & I have a blast.

I currently have $80 in mods, a few alignments, shocks & tires... and it does very well. Add a $300 locker & it's going to be very close to the bigger guys I hang with.

Well thank you, I know many have disconnected the front before on the H3 but you really showed everyone its not as bad as everyone thinks it is. Elripster thanks for the explanations too!

18mm wrench & an allen (8mm or so, I didn't do it that way) or 18mm deep well socket or impact & a vice grips to grab behind.

Once you've had them off, it's pretty easy to get them back & forth, but first time was a pain for me, I stopped by a shop & had them hit it with an impact.

Tons of quick disconnects out there if you have to drive to the trail, but even if you only do one side it's worth it.

Yeah, always nice to bounce an idea off a bunch of different viewpoints!

At this point I've wheeled 8 or 9 times with it off, probably as much as most folks do in a full year. I've done two of the hardest trails around here with it disconnected, and it has really done well.

No guarantees on longevity, look at the CV angle at full droop... pretty steep, but we're within the bumps, and if you start needing power from a wheel... odds are it's not hanging down there at full droop.

The FJ articulates more than we do by a little, and those guys very rarely have CV issues... pretty sure I'm not re-inventing the wheel here.

These guys:

All disconnect except for one guy.

Quite a few days on this setup now, VERY happy with how well it works. No cv issues, and it feels great, no real issues with anything in the rear.... just wanted to post a solution to one problem I'm having, for future searchers. The rear tires at full stuff were hitting the inner fender, and I recently figured out how I'm going to get rid of that one nuisance.

if you look on top of the bump stop, there's a square block attached to it, It looks like it's part of the rancho lift setup, but doesn't matter, any shop could make something similar & weld or bolt it on for you.

131_0607_11_z+hummer_h3+rear_suspension.jpg

I'm making a few other changes, so I'll get that all settled before I do this, but now I know what to do.

btw, I regularly have other IFS guys ask how I got the amount of flex in this rig... it is not a small difference in traction. Places others spin... I don't anymore!

Flex never hurts if your wobbling on two wheels you need more. When the tires are on the ground lockers are less important. Think of the missing link shackles on the samurai's or the revolver shackles on the jeeps. Just need a better drive shaft to go that far.

We don't need a longer front driveshaft for flex as the front diff never moves, its the halfshafts that move. The rear would need a longer driveshaft for the added flex but I feel it isn't necessary for simple things like shackles and disconnecting. A spring over or a bigger change would require a new driveshaft for the rear
