I honestly can't remember the reasoning, but I remember when I changed mine, I wasn't positive which fluid to use. I ended up just buying it at the dealer using the GM part number in the manual. The price was comparable to all the other fluids I had seen at the parts store.

Also, I totally spaced it...I'm overdue for a change myself. Thanks for the service reminder!

Extreme 4X4 put a suburban on the dyno set 4X4 high with all OEM fluids and then changed EVERYTHING to royal purple synthetic oil an they pick up 15HP and a little over 20 torque on. Due to the less friction on part they were able to move more freely. It was pretty cool to see this and at my 50,000 everything is going synthetic.

I used the mobile 1 synthetic atf... The owners manual said dex III for my 06. Noted to use something with the type H designation... That's crazy about the royal purple stuff.

I've been using Royal Purple in my diff's for years and I love the stuff. Wasn't impressed with their motor oil vs Mobil1, but I have always wanted to try Royal Purple in my transmission and transfer case. I'm not 100% sure, but I think ATF IV is already a full synthetic so any good brand should do.

I have an 06...

My OM originally said to use Dexron III with the H Spec...But..Inserted as a loose page, an amendment was added to disregard that original statement..(I think it was because they stopped making it under Dexron III and was calling it something else) and it said to use this stuff ONLY! I figure how can you friggin go wrong, when it says right on the bottle what it is used for... and I have and have changed it twice now, once every 30,000 miles..absolutely no problems and I do use all the FWD functions once in a while to keep everything limbered up.
MVC-002F-9.jpg

and it specifically said not to use Dexron VI..So whatever....I think a good synthetic ATF would work just fine.

I'm sure this has been discussed and beat to death many times over, but this should be considered THE answer.

From the GM electronic service manual:
Transfer Case Fluid
DEXRON®VI
88861003
88861004
Vehicle Speed Sensor O-Ring
DEXRON®VI

Back when Dexron VI was first released, there was some confusion from B/W in regard to the fluid they wanted in the t/case. They originally came with Dexron IV. B/W did testing and finally approved Dexron VI. In addition, owner manuals are notorious for being incorrect, at times.

I had mine changed when they did the trans flush and they used Dexron VI. Got a great price so I told the dealer to go ahead and do the t/case too.

You guys got me so confused now.

What the hell is GM's problem anyway?...just tell us the name of the damn fluid instead of some part number (like anybody buys fluids from a dealer). I can see myself walking into an AutoZone like Rain-man and asking..."I need an equivalent to GM #8886103 or #8886104...but not #8886100. Definitely not #886100...definitely not. I'm an excellent driver." I already know I would get the deer-in-the-headlights look from the counter guy. And I already know he would grab the closest can of ATF and say "here...this will work....its wet and slippery".

Is this really that critical? What sort of minute differences can there possibly be between formulas?

I've run Amsoil in all sorts of other machines but, this is my first electronic-full-time-transfer-case fluid change. Nearly every supplier says theirs "meets or exceeds OEM fluids"...but, clearly there is a wide range of opinions. I'm not real particular...I just don't want to screw something up.

oh yeah...K-mart sucks.

4speed...I wouldn't over think this too Much..Me and F5 have had lengthy discussions on this subject and I agree with what he says to be his inside working knowledge at GM when he was working for them..so I firmly believe that in the Borg-Warner Transfer case, that Dexron VI is totally acceptable....

I agree with Dennis.
I been running this in my transfer case for about 8,000 miles and have got no problems yet...I was Wanting To Run Royal Purple Since I Know It Is A Good Brand And I Run It For My Motor Oil And Axels. But I Don't Think They Make one for vehicles requiring dexron Vl.

Noted as a milestone. Dex 6 is the replacement for dex 3. Dex 6 is a partial synthetic which GM has gone to. You also have the new dexos engine oil which is a partial synthetic. That is entirely another topic. We'll see when we hit that one.

So here's what throws me for a loop.... My 06 owners manual says dex III-H... Royal purple max atf says compatible with gm dex III-H but not compatible with gm dex VI.... But dex VI is the replacement for dex III..... Sooooooo... Can I run the royal purple cause I've got III-H in there now but I couldn't run the royal purple if I swapped my III-H for VI...?

To be safe, Run your Royal Purple..it will work fine .....why there was a concern in the 06 model not to use DexVI, was because Borg-Warner didn't know if it would work or not yet..since that early bulletin, according to F5, that has been dismissed and DexVI is acceptable in either case or so is your Royal Purple ...Just be sure to drain out all of what is currently in your T/C before you refill.

I wonder if the "loose page amendment" (that Dennis was referring to), was inserted into the 06 owners manual due to the plastic shift fork? Perhaps the fluid was found to be "attacking" the plastic material and weakening it? Just a thought.

Hmmmm. Interesting point... I can't believe they used a piece of plastic for such a critical part in the first place.
