Cyclone would be cool for sure, I talked to a ARB tech and he told me DO NOT run a regular precleaner, unless i was only going to install it while driving under 30 mph. Said most JK's running around with them arnt providing enough cfm's for the motor.

And you base that conclusion on what? Just because you wheel where there is no risk of being in water, be it for fun or work, doesn't make something dumb.

If you spend any time in Australia you'll see that 70-80% of land cruisers have snorkels

He'll most of them already have them on at the dealer!

It's either because you will end up caught in a flood and need it (Queensland issue mostly) or your going to make trips more the an hour inland and need it for dust control....

Some places just warrant the need for a snorkel, some places don't

I'll weigh my opinion :D haha. I think a snorkel is great. It serves a very good purpose. Like ramrod said...some places need it and others dont. I'd like to get one some day but it's low on the list and IMO they look pretty sweet :cool:

Agreed, Some places need them and some don't...This is what I'm askin. Water crossings, not tryin to drive through a lake, Cj... But, if I was, I would do more then ,just a snorkel. We know, there is alot more to it...

Me, where I live, up here on the hill. There are more mtns, tight trails trees, boulders, rock slabs and some rivers. So, first things first. Rear locker and 4:1 TC... Then...I can start crossin things w/ a fightin chance. It is on the wish list, just lower...Thanks. Again, savin for rear locker first unless, My TC goes first...?

Just don't like them. I think the factory parts due a fine job. Been in the harshest conditions a desert could offer and was no big deal. Took an air hose to the air filter afterwards and you won't even know, except for the massive amount of dust in the engine bay and inside the Hummer. I've also driven through water over my hood briefly too, expected water in the air box, but there wasn't.

Going back to the BCM topic, I have needed to replace my BCM when I was stuck at the bay side of South Padre Island. I was about 1/2 wheel sunk in muddy clay like sand. What started out as fun in the sun turned out to be a night of survival until help arrived the following morning.

I didn't know this but on the bay side of the island, Water comes from underneath the ground especially in black muddy areas. The water then recedes on low tide.. Well we got to witness this first hand over night until help arrived. .
attachment.php

I panicked a little but then came to acceptance that my h3 would be ok if I just did not turn it on. . and that I would never go to the bayside of the island again.

in the background you can see the evidence of friends and I using shovels, boards to get me out without much success.

The tide finally recedes. I had to use a towel to cover the sun from burning us, Nice Sea breeze though.

From a distance in the morning.

Help arrives, Oh did I mention they also got stuck in the deep sand area.

This is How they did it to get me out. they came prepared with boards and a very very long tow extension.

Cost:
Towing: $250
BCM: $600
An Adventure I will never forget: Priceless
(I have more pictures I can post on another forum)

Sure.. . a snorkel would of helped but the factors involved in this were too great.
The BCM eventually gave out causing the computer to freak out. I was at the Guadalupe mountains national park when all of a sudden the brake lights went out. Found that the fuse to the brake lights would pop ever time I replaced it with a new one. so rigged a fuse to prevent the popping but noticed it caused one of the brake lights to stay on as if there was a short some where. So I had to take the fuse out and drive with no brake lights. The odometer stopped working after awhile as well. I took it to 3 mechanics and no one could find the short. . so eventually just replaced the BCM.
- Lesson learned. Use the right tires. protect ALL your electronic connections!
- I am still looking for a way to protect the BCM as that the electronics are the main things affected.
- I also wonder if having a small 2.5" lift would of helped.

It's handy to prevent water ingestion at least on the H1, but you don't need a big tall one for that application. I used a cut off HMMWV storkel for a while.

I'm snorkeless at the moment, but I plan to fabricate a few aluminum snorkles this summer that can use the OEM cap or a precleaner.

I think the BCM and the partial electronics were damaged from salt spray. a few things began to rust afterwards that I'm keeping an eye on. the door handles for example are kinda sticky. The combination of having that bad battery terminal connection did not do my alternator any good either. That got replaced as well.

A picture of my friend standing where we were stuck. Glad we stopped trying as we could of really sunk ourselves.
Terrain near Salt water. . . never again.
All I remember was the mud caking my tires over and over again. @#$ those Bridgestone dueller A/T tires! They Suck!

The remnants of an all night struggle and survival.
Some friends came to our help in the middle of the night to pick us up. They took us into town to get food and supplies then brought us back to the H3. He did not have a 4x4.
Which leads me to my other question.. . considering most h3's are automatic, how do you get through rough areas like deep sand and muddy situations from 4 hi to 4 low without stopping? Wouldn't stopping or rolling to a stop cause you to bog down?
