I read 315/75 is thinner than 35x12.5. Is it really that big of a difference? The tires (kumho road venture mt) I'm looking at only come in 315/75 but I don't want skinny tires

315s are very close to 12.5. Offcourse thats tire specific but ur talking about a max 1/2 " difference

what tire is made in a 35" 12.5 16?

315/75 16 resolves to 34.8 x 12.5 - the benefit of the height/aspect is makers can't fudge the respective height/width. I bought a set of tires several years ago that were supposed to be 35x12.5 16.5. They actually were 32.7 x 11.75 (at least they got the 16.5 right)

So it wouldn't be a noticeable difference?

it shouldn't be - however, as I said before, manufacturers can fudge the numbers on the inch scale whereas it's a lot harder (without going all geek in explanation) with the width/aspect type of tire size listing.

maybe I should geek a bit.... in the inch scale, the first number is the maximum height of the tire for its recommended rim. Thus, on a 36" tire, if you put it on an 8" rim then max inflate it; it will come in at 36 - however, put it on a 12" rim and it'll barely be over a 35" tall tire. The width/aspect relies on the average height when measure across the furthest point on the tire... so you could technically get a tire that would measure 36" tall, yet still be a 35" tire (put it on the 8" rim and overinflate)... it's also why two people can have the same tire on the same vehicle and one rubs and the other doesn't.... I know, I really didn't clear that up for you - sorry(-ish).

I answered my own question.... Swampers make a 16" 35" tall tire. I love swampers, but they're one of those tire makers who have fuzzy math when it comes to actual tire height - my favorite tire for dual purpose rigs (meaning, you drive it almost daily) is 36 14.5 15.... however, those tires generally come in at about 35.5 when new.

Noticeable? Well as superbuickguy said, its tire specific. Check each tire specs and compare, but most 315/75/16 tires turn out to be very close to a 35x12.5 tire
