4:1 transfer case on the road...

Ok, my plans are to save for a 4:1 transfer case for wheelin, before a rear locker( I have time, still savin). I was asked, if it would affect my hwy performance and I could not answer them cause, I don't know.
So, would it affect road use. I do know it would help me wheelin...

How much do the t cases run?

I'm not exactly sure. I've heard from about $900 and the GM House was about $1500+. I haven't checked junkyard yet either and not sure if I want a used one or if it really matters. I'm not very good at this wrenchin stuff. I'm hopin for about summer time to be able to get one. And of course, I like any advise from our peps here when its time.

Don't get the transfer-case, the rear locker will do much more for you off-road. However the transfer case is no difference on road from what you got already.

I dis with Schwarttzy on this one. I think the crawler t-case is much more useful than a locker (especially if you run 35" tires). However, I would not mess with a swap unless your factory t-case has failed. Its one of those "if you're going to swap it...then might as well upgrade to the 4:1" type jobs. The performance gain is entirely in low-range, so you won't see any difference at all on the street.

On the rear locker...
The one that comes with the Adv. Pak is questionable at best. It uses round pins to engage it, and these tend to wear out in a fairly short time. I recently spoke with Eaton, and they have replaced the "pin" type engagement with a "dog-ring" type on the 8.6 GM axle. This is the type used on all of their other stuff...14-bolts, D-60s, D-44s, etc., and it doesn't wear-out as fast. So if you want to add an electric rear-locker...I would opt for the newer over-the-counter Eaton design over the stock AP locker. Of course, if you can pick-up a factory AP rear axle for cheap...then go for it. Just make sure you pull the diff apart and inspect the pins prior to installing it. You can get a re-build kit from Eaton that includes new pins.

Both designs are prone to crash-locking, and they ratchet themselves when you change direction from forward to reverse. Remember this when you're wheeling and be gentle on them. If you are a caveman wheeler and this is a concern...then you need to be using an ARB air-locker or an OX locker. Both of these lock and stay locked regardless of rotation changes.

I started out without a 4:1 and without a rear locker....in Moab the added control of a 4:1 is unreal. On steep climbs I used to have to put my foot on the brake and rev it up a bit, let the tires chirp, basically cause drama. In the rocks I used to bounce much more. Without the 4:1 I would have to give a decent amount of gas and as momentum started it was time to stop. With the 4:1 it just crawls...It sucked to live without a 4:1 or locker but I think it made me a better driver...once I had them I was much more capable. Lockers are helpful as well. With my added flex of the spring over I find my rear locker isn't as useful as it was when I had less flex but it still helps a ton. I think a front locker would help me more but my concern is that I am already pushing my front end to the limits with what obstacles I tackle and locking it will either work out better or end tragically. If I engage the locker and crawl without spinning it will help a ton. If I have to spin tires I would rather disengage the front and let it spin open and let T.C. Do it's thing. That's for the front though. For the rear lock it and don't worry about it.

Schwartzy would probably understand how much the 4:1 helps if he started without it. To me both are important...especially with this hamster engine i5.

I have done some research and also from Q+A. 4:1 is my first drive mod. I was told ,after hangin w/ Black Sheep. Even w/ my 33s A/Ts w/ sipps. I would have not had some of the spin I did. Kinda stopped me in my tracks, when they were wet or even tryin to catch a edge. First thin I did from the Oct run was , get 35s Duratracs. For the snow an ice here but also, crawlin rocks here and Moab. And even as I write this, My front end seems to be addresed more w/ the 35s. Leanin to Outfitters for that.
That all said. I like the direction you guys went,Cj and Chris. I'll try not to copy everythin you guys did. try...Still hope to see you in Moab Chris for the next run. Now , we need to talk 4speed to make a road trip to Moab. It is a blast...Think about it more Cj...Thanks

mid april....Come on. Im dying to see your rig!

What was very interesting to see last april was jakesz28, he had an unlocked H3 with no 4:1. All he did was disconnect his sway bars and used both feet to help with throttle control and he WALKED up stuff that I have never seen non adventure H3s do before.

Not trying to copy one bit...I encourage everyone to run my setup. I like it so much more then stock and CJ is pushing me to take it to another level with his setup....not yet but soon. Lol

Hmmmm....

Early April, right?

Yes, April 21st to the 25th. It would be a nice road trip and new and fun terrian for you and your rig. Keep thinkin about it. You still have time to get ready for it.
Also, if you go to the Moab thread. Looks like we are startin a Moab parts express. If that helps at all too

This may be a little off topic but what sway bar links are you guys running? Are there options for the front and rear to allow quick discos to be used? I'm thinking about Schwartzys rear shackles but it seems as though I wouldn't get full advantage of them unless my sway bar is disconnected.

I run rancho sway bar links with my own quick disco pins. It seems like for the rear alot of guys run JKS discos.

I should have a rear locker this year. I have some repairs to get done on the hummer. Plus I just picked up a 2500hd that needs some new tires. So I have other things that come before the locker.
I think the 4 to 1 would make the bigger difference. Especially since I disconnect both sway bars. That spot that two locked 4 to 1 h3's needed a slight tug and I walked up should show some importance in disconnecting.
I would have liked to see them disconnect and try again.

My ZJ with 33's, 4.10 gears, had a 2.65 T-Case and not a single full locker. Just limited slip rear and Tru-Trac front. The vehicle is best described as legendary if you ask anyone who saw me wheel the thing.

I just don't get this t-case obsession, you don't gain any additional traction. All you get is more torque.

Last April I ran Moab disconnected in the rear only. I think the rear helps disconnected but not as much as the front. Since April I've disconnected the front and it makes a much bigger difference. Looking at the thickness of the sway bars should show why the front helps more. I can't wait to see how squeaky does fully disconnected.

I just read through your build thread Chris. I like the idea of making your own. I wonder what options we stockers have since our links are one piece. The jks ones are def pricey...

Not true. It's not just more torque, but more torque at lower RPMs where it is more useful. You get the ability to better control the throttle and climb/descend obstacles when using the tires within their limits, where more throttle might mean a break in traction. Thus, you do get more traction. It's made a significant difference from me on attacking the very same obstacles from a base t-case to 4:1. I'd much rather take a smooth and steady approach with the 4:1 than a tires-chirping, wheels-spinning, front end bouncing approach that I would consistently experience previously.

If you want balls out wheeling where obstacles are overcome with high wheelspin and simple momentum, then yes, you can discount the benefits of a 4:1 transfer case. That may not be what you were doing, but that's a scenario where the 4:1 doesn't provide much benefit.

Having "Just limited slip rear and Tru-Trac front" is a far cry from truly open diffs like on the base H3s. Not even close to comparing apples to apples.

My rear disconnects were from a jeep. I got them from eBay for around $40. Don't remember the model but it's in my build thread I think.

EDIT: my rear disconnects are JKS quicker disconnects (WJ#3100) I just ran a die down the shift to thread it more then shortened it to fit.

You could just disconnect one side and leave it. I disconnect both sides in the back and tie it up with a rubber bungee cord. The front I just pull the link off on one side. It was tough the first time because of the locking nut. But I ran a die down the tie rod and a tap through the nut so it comes apart easy now.
