Who's running what winch?

Been researching, searching forums, etc. Going to be adding a winch to my H3 sometime in the near future. I've decided on CBphoto's Hi Mount winch mount (need to purchase that too). Winch's I'm looking at: Warn VR10000, Recon 10500, Superwinch. Anything else I should consider? Minimum winch for an H3? I want synthetic rope and not cable. Thanks for any input guys :)

Got a few local guys with the recon & at least one on here... all seem to have good to say.

Just found a steelcraft mount/brushguard locally for $200 yesterday... recon will be on the way soon.
Waterproof, includes a remote, and comes with synthetic line... works for me!

You probably found out about this from Hunner's post earlier today.

This is the Warn PowerPlant HD. It's a 12,000lb winch and a 90psi air compressor in one unit. It's expensive, but worth it in my opinion. Mine is mounted on a CBphoto mount (like you mentioned), and as you can see, I use a synthetic line as well.

I could buy a yota crawler a guy has for sale here (with a winch:huh:) for the price of that winch & synthetic line!! Why in the WORLD would you spend that much for a winch & a piddly 90 psi compressor????

I'm running the mile marker 9500 that originally came with the BA bumper. IMHO, it's a workhorse.

...uh, because he can & to each his own! :banghead:

Oh crap... I TOTALLY forgot to read the part of the rules where it's ok to harass anyone that's NOT looking to waste a ton of money (every thread I see on here)... but you can't question someone for spending $1500 on a winch.

I'll go back & read over the rules so I don't make that mistake again.:finger::asshat

I don't mind the question. I like having both in one unit and I like having them both easily accessible. I don't have to dig to use my air compressor. I like having the winch open so it's easier to clean and rewind. The synth line is lighter, more plyable and doesn't straighten under a hard pull (making it a pain to rewind). I am the type of person that prefers to buy quality and do it right the first time. Dealing with substandard equipment and replacing it more often doesn't make sense to me (financially or in time and effort). I am not opposed to doing without or roughing it, but I've learned long ago that quality equipment is worth the extra expense. To each his own.

I run the Warn 9500XP in the H2o Bumper....very reliable and fairly priced. I also have a Viair 450 Constant Duty compressor which stays at 150psi and 2.5 gal air tank - it also runs the front air locker.

Thats kind of like someone asking you why you bought a Hummer, when you could have just bought a $5,000 Jeep trail rig. You should know by now, everyone is entitled to there own opinion.

I don't see anyone question his theory. Could he have not bought the yota rock crawler he talked about and saved himself over $15k? Yes but did he? No. So there is obviously a reason he spent the extra money, just like James spent the extra money on the winch. So why question what someone else spends?

Man you guys are over kill in my books, I ran a smittybilt 8000 and it was fantastic and was stronger than anything I ever needed. I am how ever this time around running a Warn VR8000 only because I want to use the Warn Wireless Remote Control.

BUT that is all dependent on having Cash Moneys.

Your point.....I think I missed it. I'm not PMSing so you must be feeling feisty.:giggle:

Let's carry on with the thread eh?

I'm curious why folks are going with 10-12K winches on their 3's. IIRC, 1.5 vehicle weight is the rule of thumb.Bigger can be better in the sack, but adding the extra weight off the front of your truck may bring bigger problems with suspension ie nose dive, sagging t-bars, over compression when braking hard... etc..

I don't know the weight difference between a 9.5 and a 12K, but I can imagine that running a synth line won't make up the difference.

To each his own though....right?

You miss my point though...

ANY time someone suggests spending less then whatever costs the most on here, that idea gets beat down INSTANTLY. I question someone spending $1500 on a winch (which he easily explained btw) and that somehow is BLASPHEMY, which is responded by a "ban this bitch" comment from a mod!

I came on here looking for a few good ideas on how to make my 3 better. In the questions I've asked, I've received more naysaying than I could possibly imagine any time I've suggested something that wasn't spending a ton of money.

Since then I've done it myself with pretty much zero support aside from a very random couple people, and tried to show other people how you really CAN improve performance without spending huge $$. I guess I'll keep letting everyone tell me it can't be done, and I won't question anyone else for not doing more real mods instead of spending big $$ on stuff that could be done for 1/3 the cost.

I completely forgot that "to each his own" only goes one way...

I must give credit to Backcountry in his last post. His rig has come a long way without spending a lot of money. Isnt that the goal? We all can have our own opinions, his way is going cheaper then most while others will spend more. Instead of fighting about it let everyone do there own thing...Backcountry, in terms of cheaper winches I have nothing but good to say about smittybilt. The XRC8 can be had for 300 bucks and the XRC10 can be had for 400...I have seen 5 or 6 different smittybilts be used multiple times for different scenarios and see them do well everytime.

My $0.02 is that the Smittybilt XRC10 with Synth-line is very lightweight and capable, and AFFORDABLE. Steel winch line weighs deceivingly more than I thought. Switching from Steel to Synth line can remove 50 lbs from the winch up front, which is significant in terms of percentage weight of the system. Also, synthetic line such as Dyneema doesnt store tensile energy like steel does, so if it were to break under load it is a less violent snap, which is safer.

Smittybilt XRC10 w/steel cable - 94 lbs
Smittybilt XRC10 w/synth cable and Hause Fairlead - 67 lbs

As a reminder for those of us running Synthetic Line - Dyneema is susceptible to UV damage, we should all be running with a Winch Cover when not in use, and usually 4WheelParts gives them out for free with the purchase of a winch anyways.

backcountry, i just now realized why you got so bent out of shape with my comment above! :emb:

I didn't mean to use the "ban the beotch" smiley-thingy! :emb: I sent that post using Tapatalk & on tapatalk the smileys are really limmited and I thought that I picked the smiley "hitting his head against the wall"! OOPS! I'm really sorry - I too would have gotten pissed if someone had responded to me like that.

I edited my original post above and please accept my sincerest apologies. If you use Tapatalk, you will see which one I meant to use. I hope it's all good and I didn't intend to offend you that way or to create any drama! I deserved how you responded to my original post but when I first read your reply on my cell phone, I didn't understand what made you react the way you did. Know that I'm logged on my PC, I see why.

OK, now back to the original topic.
