Ideas on what to do with old spare mount or back door??

So as you all can see I moved my spare up to the roof rack a little while back. I'm just looking for any good ideas of what to do with my rear door now. I still have the spare mount and I have some descent metal fab skills, (made the roof rack). What could I do with the spare mount?? Any ideas regarding building anything off of it?? Or just ditching it and doing something completely different?? Or just leaving it as is?? I would appreciate any ideas thanks!!!

Personally, I think H3s look goofy with the spare removed from the back. If you have some really good body shop skills, I think it would look great if you removed it altogether and made a smooth gate. That would look really good in my opinion.

That would look good, but that's the only problem, I don't have any body shop skills....... (paint, bondo, etc,) I can just make **** out of metal and either bedline it, pasti dip it, or powdercoat it. Im thinking something along the lines of a basket of some kind, or gas tank carriers. And that's the other problem, I run out of ideas after those two haha.

Why remove it in the first place? Always seemed like a downgrade to remove your spare tire or relocate it when there's nothing really wrong with it where it's at in the first place, design or otherwise. Just bought a brushguard off of someone that had his removed and he just had a piece of black diamond plate in the recessed center. He didn't really have a reason why he removed his besides he was bored. Idk, maybe I'm missing something..

Well my main reason is for when I pull my camper, or my other trailer, With the spare on the top the door clears the jack handles on both my trailers.( the tire would hit my camper jack) Also on my camper I can leave it hooked to the truck and have the slide outs open. (pop-up camper). With the spare mounted on the back, I cant get the slide outs all the way open. Usually when I go actual wheeling not just playing around I just throw it in the back of my buddies ford ranger so I don't have so much weight up there. My spare would stick out pretty far because of the offset of my aftermarket rims.

Whatever I put back there I would like it to not hang below the door, or stick out 16-18 inches like the tire did. Unless It can be removable pretty easily............. Otherwise that defeats the whole purpose of taking it off to begin with. Once again thanks for yalls input!!

I think the rear mounted spare is part of the identity of the H3, like the chrome grill. However, I am starting to dig the smooth look a little (even if it does remind me of an older Cherokee). If I pulled the spare, I would mount a wide, tall, but not too deep aux fuel cell on the rear door. I would also probably make some protective armor around it to reduce crash risks.

I think you should fabricate a centered ladder to match your roof rack. You could even add gas can mounts on each side of it.

I'm with 650Hawk on this, that would look pretty great.

Thank you 650Hawk! That is a good idea!!! Well I'll be starting on that this weekend hopefully!! Thanks guys!

the good old lasagna pan isn't bad for easy removal and gives it a decent look
but the ladder would be best in my opinion
I just did this because I don't have a matching spare but now my spare is back on

Could even keep it just a shorty ladder, from just above the bumper up to just slightly above the bottom of the window (no real need to actually climb all the way up, is there?). After all, the existing mounting points (for the spare tire) are fairly beefy to hold the weight of the tire, so... Just thinking out loud, that's all!

Whichever route you decide on, be sure to show us the finished product!

Thanks so much everybody for all the input. For now I'm sticking with just the ladder idea. I went and bought the steel today, now just to put it all together. I'll put up pictures as I progress.

Well tomorrow I'm gonna finish up all the welding and what not, I'm gonna cut an angle into the ladder about half way up so I can lean it forward toward the truck to kinda go with the curve of the back window. And again don't get me wrong I really liked the gas tanks idea I had from 650hawk, but I changed it to fit me a little better with........ Wait for it....... Fishing rod holders mounted to the sides of the ladder. I like to back up to the water at the beach and go way out there and cast. Then just hang out and cast a smaller pole just into the surf. Of course that could all change if one of y'all comes up with a better idea, or I think of something else. I'll keep y'all posted. Thanks for all the help and support by the way!

I'm seeing more and more Jeeps running around with no spare? I can see throwing it up on the roof, but not having one? Is this a new young Hipster thing? Not looking to derail this thread and debate it. Just looking to see why it's being done. The rod holders need to be on the front of the truck. One needs to be able to sit, drink beer, and listen to music while watching the poles.

Hahaha I do like your idea there Woodtick!! I have a receiver hitch set up I built a while back for the front that just bolts behind the grill guard. I I I built it with the intentions of using my rod holders I have on a receiver hitch and my bbq that's on a hitch. But I never installed it.... I'm still debating.... I'm about to head out and start finishing up the ladder part now. I'll let y'all know what I go with in a bit

Oh and as for the jeeps with no spare. It's probably because most of those jeeps your seeing have big ol rims with big ol tires. And guess what...... It's just cheaper to by 4 than 5. That's all I can assume, though I could be wrong.
