I whole heartedly agree with you get what you pay for. However, once in awhile you do find something that measures up for a lot less than normal. I have a Recon 10,500 lb winch on my H2. I have used it several times, with a couple pretty hard pulls. It does not seem to get really hot, and is very strong. It came with synthetic line and both wired and wireless remotes. The wireless works up to 100' away. It will work further, but gets sort of spotty. Not sure when you would be that far away anyway, I was just seeing how far I could go.

Anyway, if you are on a tight budget, I really do recommend the Recon.

My T-max broke the second time I used it. It's junk and sitting in my shop where it has been for 3 years.

Warn.

Even my Warn 9500 got hot and shut off when it hauled an H1 up a steep ledge. It depends on how you use it, when and where and what you are using it on.

There is a weight limit, and I think the rule of thumb is 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle. Snatch blocks save your winch on heavy pulls.

Take a self recovery course,

Did I say Warn?

If you're on a budget....some things you shouldn't skimp on. Save your money.

Or, keep and eye on Craigslist/Pirate4x4 classifieds and Vendor sales.

And like anything else that is mechanical - it requires regular maintenance.

You still get duds even with well proven winches, but thats part of the mass production process

Bought myself a brand new Warn 9500 XP winch, and the first thing I did was to remove the motor to open the vent holes as needs to be done when mounting feeet forward, and as I was re-assembling it, I broke one of the bolts holding the motor fast. still trying to source a replacement bolt, as these bolts aren't listed by warn as a replaceable part...

Send me a picture of it and when I head up to Oregon for Thanksgiving, I'll stop by the warn plant and see if I can get one for you (or 2) :)

My two cents: WARN.

It is the only winch that is world recognized for its solid reputation and dependability. WARN is and has been manufactured here in the states(Clackamas, OR to be exact) since day one and is the only winch to still be USA made. Yes, some of you will say it has chinese components(which it does, specifically the controller - cheaper to build it there), but it has more US sourced parts on it than not. And if you need service for whatever reason, it is a whole lot easier to find Warn in anytown, USA than it is to find all of the rest combined, as well as the only manufacturer to offer in-house rebuild services. Warn is still the soul source supplier for Ford lockout hubs, and they manufacture the hubs for all chrysler 4x4. All of this I speak from the heart - having been to both the Milwaukie and Clackamas plant, having toured the manufacturing facility. And I am personal friends with 2 engineers and the VP of product placement. No, I didn't/don't get "deals". Its only expensive the SECOND time you have to buy it.

Like everyone else has said Warn is the way to go. When I go with a winch I will go Warn. It may be more but I would rather not have one for an extra few months while I save up, it will be worth it. Warn also seems like a company to back their products and will not argue with you on the phone about warranty issues. I know a guy who did have issues with a warn winch and they treated him well and made sure he was back on the road with a working winch rather quickly. I also want to eventually go with a rear winch and may go with smittybilt aka "****tybilt" as some call it, on the rear because it wont be used as much. They are alot cheaper then warn and my brother hasnt had issues on his 10Klb XRC smittybilt and has had about 4 pulls. My friend also has a smittybilt XRC 8Klb winch and has used it a lot and even pulled that rolled grand cherokee back up and has had no issues. If you do want to go a cheaper route I would go smittybilt. The XRC8 can be had for 300 bucks and the XRC10 can be had for 400 bucks but if you are willing to spend more go with a warn.

I was going to buy the same one Scarsman bought off eBay. There are a lot of great reviews about them on a bunch of different forums. The local shop that installed my bumper was also a Warn dealer, so I bought one of the new VR series. Hopefully saving a few bucks on that series won't bite me. For me it mostly came down to supporting my local shop and having one place to go should I have any issues.
