Will Hummers ever be appreciated for what they are?

Been watching a lot of YouTube videos and reading a lot of forum posts on Hummers (H3 mainly), so much unjustified hate! It's either love it or hate.....but seems like even in a video if a Hummer outperforms the rest it still doesn't gain the respect it deserves. More than half the comments bash rather than applaud. If the Hummer walks through an obstacle with ease and say an FJ struggles a little more to get through, most of the praise goes to the FJ and people don't talk about the Hummers performance.....only bashing on unrelated stuff like price/engine/fuel etc. I've also noticed how a lot of comparisons are done with models that don't have the adventure package, like it was set up to make the Hummer fail

just seems like us Hummer owners have to work many times harder just to gain the respect of others. Not that it matters, I am super proud and happy to finally have a hummer....but just irked me a little reading all that. Ignorance

No, but it doesn't matter as long as you like it. I make very few life decisions based on the YouTube comments section. I think it's a good life rule.

outside of Jeep owners (who are constantly reminded of their poor life choice in a Heep - and for the record my wife's, new 2014 Heep is in the shop again for a mystery coolant leak) the world has gone ambivalent towards H3s. You can tell that by their prices. When I bought my Alpha 3 years ago, I paid 18,000. I've been seriously offered 28,000 for it now. Granted, I put tires, wheels, and an air compressor on it.... but I've yet to have any "newer" car appreciate in my ownership.

That said, I think the H2 is the cause of the angst, and by that I mean the hip-hop crowd that loved them. If GM had gone from H1 to H3, then it would have just been a Jeep competitor but the H2 became the poster child for hate because most people don't get the words "departure angle" "short wheelbase" and "passenger space"... not hating on the H2 - but pointing out the world understands the H1 and the H3...

I should point out my test subjects. I live near Seattle, I'm part of the Mountaineers, and Search and Rescue. The Mountaineers are .... hmmm, how to say this in a nice way.... they have issues about who should use the outdoors. Even they don't mind the H3 many mistake it for a Cherokee (which many of them drive)... so no, the dude who walks up to you at the gas pump just doesn't exist up here anymore. I suppose it also helps that there have been lots of people rescued by my and another H3T that runs in Pierce county.

My H2 trucks did attract the most negativity. The H1s get 99.9% positive comments and the H3 is rarely negatively commented on. In fact my wife gets a lot more positive comments while driving it than I do. Can't figure that one out. :) one of the reasons she likes her h3 so much is all the positive comments she gets on it. ( leveled, 35" tires, Lights, rocky roads, BA bumper and winch, BA two piece wheels, etc )
the greenies are relatively content that the brand was shutdown. Now they are off to kill something else.

Well, I will be new to off-roading, forum member Cowboy lives in the next town to me and will join his offroad group. Being a novice doesn't make an H3 look good but I'll do my best. We all know if a Jeep or FJ gets stuck, it's because the driver sucks.....but if a Hummer gets stuck, it's always the vehicle....or at least that's how it will be seen

They probably won't, and it doesn't really matter to me. 10 years from now they are going to be such a unique vehicle. Something that you wont see everyday. Sure not the collectible status that a Ferrari 250 GTO, but it'll have some. And someday when we're all driving electric cars and gasoline powered ones are a way of the past, ill be the old guy with the big monster sitting in the garage that roars to life every now and then. :)

most of the hatred comes from web wheelers whose only knowledge comes from what they've read. they're really brave behind a keyboard and that's about it. The eco crowd probably doesn't care much anymore. Utube comments are a magnet for idiots with social problems so I don't bother commenting or responding to them.

One thing I like about this forum is the members aren't brand snobs. We love our Hummers but will wheel with anyone that is a responsible wheeler regardless of what they drive. Lots of us started in Jeeps. Some in Yotas and other makes. Why would you care what someone else drives? Their bucks, their choice. Same for us. Almost everyone I meet on the trail is cool. Every now and then you meet some toothless, deliverance resembling Jeep snob on the trail but most Jeepers are like us, if you are a responsible wheeler they are cool with you and what you drive.
The people I have a hard time with are the laid back, back to nature, save the whale types that think everyone should ride bicycles, braid their hair and sing Kumbaya and Hakuna Matatta around the redwoods. There just isn't any common ground to work with there.

Just go out and wheel it. When you are new to wheeling you can use your inexperience as an excuse and everyone who is serious into wheeling will understand where the limitation is. As you get more experience and move up to more difficult and technical obstacles the shortcomings of the vehicle will come into focus but by then the people you wheel with will understand that the reason you can't clear up that 32" vertical ledge may be because you're not in a locked buggy on 42's. I get out an push mine to represent the brand. I've had a couple people come up and try to talk down the H3 and my friends in Jeeps will set them straight before I even get a chance to speak. If you are out wheeling and trying then real 4WD guys will recognize that and respect it (not saying they won't raz you, but then they raz other Jeep and Wrangler guys too).

I agree with you 100 %. I never owned a hummer until now. I did my research and my homework and I purchased a H3. I also own a brand new Corvette C7. Every one wants to race, tailgate me and f@#k with me. There are a lot of jealous and ignorant people out there. Love my new to me H3 and my new C7.

Just remember, the idiots tend to scream the loudest. There is a ton of internet hate for this brand, but if I wanted something like everyone else, I would have bought a Jeep.

I remember telling some asshat at a gas station once that if the fact that I drove a Hummer didn't tell him clearly enough that I didn't give a $hit what other people thought nothing I said could convey the message any clearer.

What I don't get is why people are so shocked when I tell them the MPG I get is similar to other "normal" trucks of similar size, and similar engine package.... why the Hummer name got singled out with such a terrible image I will never know

How is resale value holding up? Prices of everything Hummer dropping like a rock? Clearly there is some appreciation of the brand regardless of what a vocal minority thinks.

Kinda reminds me of when I pulled into a Miami speed shop in my Trans Am. While getting some dirty "what the F is he doing here" looks I jokingly told the guy working there that it's going up for sale if anyone wants to buy it. I was told in all seriousness that nobody around there wanted anything to do with a car that wasn't a front wheel drive import. Funny that the owner drove a RWD BMW, and a RWD Lexus was in the parking lot getting it's fenders rolled with a baseball bat. Had I pulled up in the car I was there getting parts for, Turbo AWD Eagle Talon, I doubt I'd have been given all those dirty looks.

someone posted this a long time ago, but I completely agree with their opinion. While the Jeep brand represents America's powerful role in WW2 and our road to victory to destroy the oppressive communists in Europe. the Hummer brand represents Bush's push through the middle east and our "oppressive" role there. Something along those lines is why the Hummer brand was picked to be defaced by the liberals all around. Even though my alpha gets the same damn mileage as a jeep
