What's next for my paint??

Ever since I bought my T I knew at some point I would have to do something about the paint on it.

At first it was because I was not happy with the overall quality of the work (under to hood was left undone, same with the door jams. Then as I got used to those little things I just looked passed it. And eventually just decided to leave it.

We fast forward a year and a half I started to notice that the flat paint in the color scheme is starting to fade pretty badly. Never thought about this when I first bought it, but it doesn’t have a clear coat and I should have totally expected this to happen over time.

So for the past 6 months I have been trying to test flat paint friendly waxes and coatings to see if I am able to restore the original look or at least reverse some of the fading that is going on. I still have yet to find anything that works so now I am starting to think I will need to look at other options.

Some of the options I have thought of include:

Vinyl Wrap: Partial vinyl wrap (follow the lines of the current paint scheme) or Full
Con: For both is that it just covers up the problem and doesn’t offer a long term solution

I am thinking that the Kyrpek Typhon would look great (picture attached below) .

Bedliner – I wheel with another T that has this done to it and would like to avoid it for a number of reasons, mainly though I don’t like how it looks up close and its $$$ to get it done professionally

New paint returning the truck to its original solid white – The reason I am hesitant about this is that I feel I will miss the custom look and feel of the truck by going back to all white

Plasti-dip: Partial (follow the lines of the current paint scheme) or full body
Con: Just as with the vinyl, it just covers up the problem and doesn’t offer a long term solution. May not be durable in the long term.

What do you guys think? Am I missing any option I should be considering?

Couldn't you just add clearcoat to the exsisting paint?

Well yes and no, if I just sprayed on a layer of clear coat now it would lock in the faded look that I am trying to get away from.

So that's why I listed re-painting add an option as I would have to add a fresh coat of paint then spay on a layer of clear

If you aren't against colors other than flat black, you could add a satin clear or a glossy clear to give it its color back.

I like the kryptek camo patter typhon in specific that's my pattern to do on my H3 once I get time money and equipment.

Well the matte finish is being bleached by the sun, it used to be a rich black, now it looks like that black tee shirt that has been though the was a million times and had faded to a grey/black. I tried fixing it with various waxes and detailing products but had no luck with them.
So now I am looking for what my options are for fixing/replacing the faded paint

Armor all will shine it back up. That or WD40. They will attract dust though, and only last until it's washed again.

paint depth is created by clear coats - as long as the underlying paint is fine, simply putting another clear coat in the flavor you like (flat, matte, gloss) should be good to go. Any reputable paint shop would be able to tell you if the paint is salvageable.

The black paint is shot with fading and deep scratches (never had a clear coat to protect it) hence the problem, it needs to be re-sprayed or covered up with something new

Well, a clear over the black should darken it up a fair bit I would think. Similar to like when it's wet.

You might look at some stuff called Monstaliner. I've seen some rigs done in that with multiple colors that looked awesome. You can spray or roll it, and the texture can be changed with different rollers or spray pressure and distance.

Have you tried a serious machine compounding & polishing (i.e., not with the stuff from the parts store? With a Harbor Freight $60 dual action polisher, some decent pads, and commercial grade polishing compound like Menzerna FG400 or Meguiars M105 you can get amazing results from dull but sound paint.

I don't think I can use it on the matte paint because it doesn't have a clear coat to polish, just a base layer

You can hand test a spot with something like Meg's ScratchX or even old fashioned Dupont White Polishing Compound (in the flat) can to see if it glosses up. You could also ask a detailer to look at it.
