Waiting To Get My H1... Some Day... Transports!

Hey all... Not having a good day at all.
As you know, I bought a 97 H1 Wagon in NC. I wanted a transporter to pick it up and get it here to Texas. I finally found a transport that looked good. High ratings and great communication. Price around $1000. Not too bad. They were going to pick it up yesterday. I asked the transporter when will the guy show up to pick it up. The driver says I'm behind because of rain, then traffic, then it will be Friday, he said he called the seller twice in the past few days to set up a place to pick up. The seller never heard from the driver. Then the driver says it could be a Saturday or Sunday pickup maybe... Well I looked into some of his delays and there was no rain anywhere within 2000 miles of the pickup, he never called the seller, more lies and then the transporter said they fired the driver. Now the transporter is looking to find someone else to pick up my H1. This has been nothing but troubles. I told the transporter they have until tonight before I move on.
Now, I was thinking I'd drive it back here (1250 miles). I would but I don't know what shape this is in. (For sure anyway). The seller says its in tip top shape. Perfect condition. But all I need is the engine or tranny to take a dump half way home. Yeah.. I should have had someone look at it before I bought it. My screwup. I went by pictures, carfax, and the guy's word and his business. This entire deal could be a huge bummer for me.
Enough Pi$$ing and Moaning...
Any thoughts on transports or know drivers to haul this beast?

I'd drive it, that being said, it's a bit unrealistic to get a driver to transport an oversized 8,000+ lb vehicle 1400 miles for $1000. I'm betting the broker is having problems getting truck drivers [independant contractors] to touch that. Especially given that weight they could haul 2-3 cars and a motorcycle and make more money if they are low balling the big carriers and movers. I'd call a few big transport companies and van lines and see what they would charge. You may have to wait a few weeks to catch a truck .

Drive it! I drove my Hummer almost 8k Miles or so on my trip from Rapid to CO, to AZ, to CA, to Utah, back to CO the up to WY and back home with lots of stops in between. Nothing failed other than the upper radiator hose. But got it shipped next day thanks to Dave at Bluehummer!:cheers:

I had a similarly poor experience with the guy who transported my truck across the country. He left the keys for my truck with a Chevy in Southern NY and waited until he pulled up at my house to realize this. :gaah:

Look up Will Haul It online.They'll get it there for about that price and good drivers
If I was in a position to take leave I'd drive it back for you without thinking twice

I initially posted this reply while waiting for my wife to finish draining the life out of me--she was in Wal Mart, I was in the parking lot.
I've thought a little more about it, and I actually told her when she FINALLY came out that if I had the leave to pull this off, she'd have come out of Wally World without a ride home---I'd seriously have started driving to pick it up. Don't ask about details, what do I do with the van when I get to NC, but man, this would be a blast!!
You can still drive it home--you've got Solid up in NC to help get you on the road, and I'm a stopping point along I-10 if that's the route you take. I'd think if the 1 was going to give you fits, it would be at the first part of the drive, the rest would be smooth sailing. Man, I'm telling you, if it were me, I'd be on the first plane out to pick it up!!!

Oh yeah, about the hauler having to lug an 8000 pound truck, they didn't get fat until the Alpha--the earlier models were trim, weighing in at about 7K for a wagon. When you consider our deuces weigh 6600 pounds, it not much different. While you think they'd get a couple more cars and a motorcycle on the hauler, you gotta remember those things are driving all over the country, and they'd really rather run with a load than empty--the more the merrier. So if they got a job for hauling your 1 on one of their routes, their not going to wait for a better deal. Work is work........

I've been thinking about driving it back. With all of the hassles and games these guys are playing. I hear two of the brokers are saying they have a contract with me and they don't. So when the real broker posts a contract, the drivers see this and wont compete. I've called the two brokers and told them to take it down. They are all saying they dont know what I'm talking about. Most likely ticked off because I'm not going through them.
I did contact Will Haul It. They didn't get back to me and I contracted to someone else. My screw up. They said they had everything set for me and I told them I was going with someone else. Damn this is like a freaking soap opera!
I give up.........

Damn......Talkabout stealing the joy out of something ! !

Hell, your best bet may be to just go and retrieve the vehicle yourself.

Check with the guys here and on the HML regarding what parts or specialty toolsyou might need to pack for the return trip.

You know.....crap like a spare PMD, odd sized sockets or wrenches, maybe acrossover parts list (AutoZone equivalents).

I think it would be a riot driving back. I did a little research and found the guy that bought it only had it a couple weeks. He's got my money and everything is done except picking it up. I think I'm all kinds of paranoid. I guess.....

Not sure If you found a shipping company yet but I used showtime auto transport. They shipped my H3T alpha from sandusky,ohio to central jersey for under $500 and took only 3 days. I highly recommend them.

Whats your concern with the guy you bought it from only having it for a couple weeks? He probably got a good deal and turning it for a quick profit, doesn't mean it's going to be a problem by any means. You just gotta relax and roll with the flow.
When I bought the deuce, it was from a small town dealer not attached to a big name manufacturer, so I didn't know what I was going to get. But they were good to work with, and offered to ship it for me, so I just relaxed and let the process work. About a week later the deuce showed up even better than I could imagine--it looked brand new, and smelled even better.
So, uh yeah, just relax and enjoy the experience even though there are a few hitches. I can speak with more confidence also because you've got ALOT of H1 experience on the forum and if for some reason it were to have a problem, these guys will happily walk you thru any scenario.
I'm not kidding though, I was so excited last night about going to pick it up for you I kinda forgot that I couldn't. I can give Will Haul It a call for you if you want, they just hauled my wife's car a few months ago and were really good. Shoot me a PM with your contact info, and if they can move the 1 soon and cheap, it's worth a shot.

It's looking like the transport people are going to pick up my baby either today or tomorrow morning.
I bought my tickets yesterday to leave this Friday to drive it back. Just cancelled them. I kinda feel bad now that I won't be driving it back. I was getting excited about the trip.
Well, it ain't over yet....

My Stock 1998 Soft top is 8300 lbs on a certified scale. That's with no passengers. If I took off the rocker panel protection off, the tool box, UCP, and drain the fuel, swap the military wheels to one piece alloys and took the spare off I *might* get to 6900 lbs. The stock curb weight for an H1 for shipping purposes [base configuration no fuel] starts at 6500 lbs for a 2 door.

A fully equipped wagon, (Alpha or not) usually are 9-10k lbs with all the stuff added on unless you really strip it down.

As for shipping I have plenty of family and my Dad who is in that business, there's no way they would do that shipment for less than $2500-3000, and thats in an enclosed van, door to door, bonded and insured. Less than that it isn't worth their time.

It's a movers stereotype, "guy buys an exotic car in Vegas, wants it shipped to New York for $300".
