H3 TPMS 4 Or 5?

Hi, I've searched the forums, but haven't found an answer.

I recently acquired a 2006 H3 at an extremely good price, however it needed New Tires and when I scanned, 2 out of 4 TPMS sensors were dead. So, I mounted New Tires, Coded and replaced all 4 TPMS and everything was fine. Yesterday I finally changed out the spare, It had a wheel lock on it of which the key apparently long disappeared and FWIW was the original unused 2006 Factory spare, Anyhow, the door sticker says Spare is 50 psi for the 285/16 and the 4 on the floor are 35psi, Oddly when I broke the spare apart it had a TPMS, I didn't replace that one since my initial scan only indicated 4 TPMS and the spare wasn't an option so therefore no way for me to code it from the PCM. (Note: I use to have a 3rd gen RAV4 that the spare WAS an Option, not sure about my new 4th gen RAV4 though)

Anyhow, this morning I got the "Low Tire Pressure" warning, All 4 tires are at pressure, Just wondering if that spare is the problem even though it's still the original factory sensor.

I haven't found a definite answer yet, But my understanding is that the H3 TPMS system only reads 4 tires, can anyone confirm this? Or do I need to break apart the spare and see about manually coding a New TPMS?

Thanks.

Yes I have to do the air down horn honk reset drill after my 5 wheel rotation. Thank you very much for the rest tool info, that could make it much easier. Thanks.

Hummer H3s only monitored 4 TPMS Sensors, BUT, OEM there are 5 TPMS sensors, including the spare, so the BCM recognizes the 4 TPMS sensors located on the ground, those sensors are associated to the BCM, including the position where they are (Front right, front left, rear right....)
So if you change any sensor, or if you change the position of any wheel in the vehicle, you must perform a TPMS RESET, you can do it without any tools, the Procedure is in the owners manual, you must perfom it perfectly, if not, the system will not recognize some wheels.

Maybe your problem is that the spare wheel is previously associated to the system, because before was one of the 4 rotational wheels. So now, the system is monitoring that wheel (bad battery in the sensor, or low pressure in that wheel, will trigger the low pressure message)

Perform a TPMS reset correctly following the Owner's manual, and you should be good to go!

Hope this help you out!

Thanks Guys, I was out of town with No internet access, so sorry for the late reply, it's raining here today, so as soon as I can, I'll try to figure out why all the sudden my light lit up from just replacing the spare.

Guerrero, You have a point, But I don't think the spare was ever dismounted from the rear door, it took me awhile to get the wheel lock off just to replace the tire, The original tire shows no wear and even says 'HUM3' in white lettering on the tread, I assume GM's way of easy identification when they were sitting in a stack. The truck was originally owned by a friend of mine that passed away in 09, he had bought it Brand New and his son drove it for the past 12 years and said he never needed the spare and stated it was the original and not to trust it. I'm pretty sure the hardest use this truck has ever seen is maybe some snow, doubt very much it's ever been on dirt until I brought it down my driveway. LOL

But you may be correct, a TPMS reset may be in order, I suppose it can't hurt. I originally cloned the codes directly from the PCM for each wheel, so the PCM/TPMS monitoring system should just have recognized them as originals in the correct position, and made sure to only do (1) wheel at a time for that reason so I wouldn't mix them up, they worked fine for a few weeks until I replaced the spare. I think once the rain stops, I'll take your advice about the Reset.

It's not a big deal other then that annoying light and I'm a little odd when it comes to things working like they are supposed to.

I'll try for an update, but not sure when that'll be, looks like a rainy week ahead.

Just wanted to give an Update. Just cause it's a pet peeve of mine when someone has a problem, asks a question in a forum, then never updates on how their problem ended up being resolved. But I digress,

Thanks for the Reset advice, performed the Relearn procedure and all is well once again, I still have no idea why it ran fine for 2 weeks after I changed the 4 down, but 2 weeks later I changed the spare and it triggered the dreaded Low Pressure light. No worries though, Thanks for the help.
