Thinking of painting?

Anyone have any experience with painting their front pillar covers? I'm not quite sure I'm going to go the route of color match, because I think the black fits well between the painted door and the window, but I hate the dull oxidized plastic look that we all know so well. Just wondering how this has worked out for others.

I think that would be a very cool direction to go. With working in a welding and fabrication shop maybe you could make some even nicer aluminum ones that have wire guides underneath for many light bar additions haha

I've got a list of ideas a mile long that I'd love to put into motion...time is of the essence though lol.
I actually just put in an order today for sheet of plate steel for my bumper build...

A lot of people are happy with the result of "Wipe New" and also treatment with a heat gun. Bed lining may be OK, but if you don't shoot all the trim, it won't match. I wouldn't use anything with a coarse finish.

I'm just going out on a limb, and correct me if I'm wrong, but by "treatment with a heat gun" you're literally talking about heating the plastic up, as to draw the black sheen back to the surface of the UV damaged plastic?

Give Wipe New a try. Stuff is amazing and can last a year or more. ReconH3 has painted his pillars (Color-matched)

Several here have reported positively on it. I haven't done it and don't know the details of the method.

Even with me having the truck parked 2 months in the sun @ 120* weather, my pillars still look better than a year ago before wipe new.

I've used lots of black trim restoring products and so far Wipe New has worked and lasted the best .

I can confirm, also. I've used 3 or 4 plastic trim products over the years. Wipe New has been the best. I did mine last October and it still looks nice.

Paint them with thick gooey mud. :) I don't know...I actually like the faded look. My H3 isn't going to car shows-- it's going out into the woods so the finely aged look works well in my opinion. I will admit it does seem to look best on the Boulder Grey though. White or black especially the faded trim does look a little off.

Anyone ever just start removing the top trim and cleaning up the body so it just looks smooth without the cheap plastic? I have wondered what it would look like cleaned off.

I plasti-dipped mine about 3 years ago and they haven't faded yet. Been through some tight bush (no pun) and they haven't shown any sign of wear!

Start by trying the heat gun method. The "method" being; just wave a heat gun at it until the faded grey disappears. It's so simple, it's so fast, and it looks really nice. It took me less than 20 minutes to remove both, heat gun them, and reinstall them. There's two screws on each hidden behind the rubber molding. In the worst case scenario you can just paint over them if you want something else.
