Definetly a great setup! Just need some off road tires on the Camper:)

Off-road tires (matching the truck) will go on my custom-built trailer next winter (or the year after, whenever I have time to build it). I like the semi-pure military look of my current trailer, and will likely keep the current wheels/tires - plus it's much easier to sell once I'm ready to upgrade to my own trailer.

I have the 8 lug axle for my M101 so I am putting Hutchinson two piece dual beadlocks wheels on it matching the H1 wheels and tires.

You could always do an axle swap. 150 with shipping will get you a 3500 lb axle in any bolt pattern

So im REALLY late here but I personally never had an issue with the rtt and the COG. The tents usually weigh around 125 lbs which in the grand scheme of things isnt too much more. Yes if you're rock crawling it could be a factor at high angles but no more than a loaded down roof rack would be. I got myself into plenty of off camber situations and never had a problem or concern with the tent. I can't speak for the roof weight since mine was obviously over my bed but Ive walked on my roof rack with it loaded without any noticeable issues. Im pretty sure as it was said earlier the distribution over multiple points allows for the extra support.

My view on the tent was this. Yes it is more expensive than a normal tent, it is builkier and heavier. But what do you get in return? For me personally a heck of a great nights sleep, peace of mind that im off the ground away from animals, never dealing with poles and rainflys, set ups and especially no clean ups. Plus when it comes to bringing the girlfriend shes comfortable which leads me back to my point about getting a great nights sleep.

Well it's finally here and installed. Thought I'd post a few pictures taken by American Offroad Expedition, from their Facebook page after they finished it. They were surprised how small the H1 made the 1.6 meter look, ( it's a little bigger then a king size bed ) Still waiting at the shop for more of the rotopaks for fuel and water to come in. They sent red gas ones instead of yellow diesel ones. I also want to find a black tool box to sit next to the tent, in either metal or preferably plastic for weight reasons. Anyone know where I can find one L60"XW18"XH about the same as tent?

Love the H1 tent set-up. You will be really happy with the Howling Moon.

For the tool/storage box, you could try one of the H3T full side length tool boxes (GM part #19166991 - the dimensions are 55 L x 17 H x 12 D in.).

I'll have to ask Mike about that next time I'm going by Tustin Hummer. Looks like that should work perfectly to store the add on annex in and a few other items.

FYI, there are 2 different part #s for these boxes - left side box is #19166991, right side box is #19166990) even though they are both easily interchangeable from left to right and vice versa if you just change the external/internal lock mechanism - which is very easy to do because there is already a predrilled hole for the lock and a removeable plug if you want to turn a RH box into a LH box and vice versa.

Best price around for these boxes is Ebay - brand new in-the-box is only $199.00 shipped.

Thanks found the one I needed on EBay. The left one is for the drivers side "right" lol. It should be perfect to store the annex in, with some extra camping gear. Plus being plastic it reduces the weight from being steel or aluminum.

Pelican Cases come in all sizes. They're not cheap, but are indestructible and watertight. You can even get them in tan or OD. Harddig Storm Cases are also good, but slightly lighter. Harddig also has some with a bag inside that you can pull our and leave the case on the rack. Both come in a huge variety of sizes and are stackable. Harddig is now owned by Pelican, but they have kept their distinctiveness.

I found out that the H3T box had good outside dimensions, but inside nowhere near enough space. However I could still use it to put a couple rifles in. I'm going to check out that pelican case that Recon mentioned. The case will be close though cause it's 18.48 inches and I only have 18.5 inches. Well I'll be crossing my fingers it works.

I'm bumping this. I love the RTT...only reason I'm staying away is COG. If I had a T I would streamline it like BU and txH3T have their tents. It doesn't kill COG because its not above the roofline. I love the look and functionality and you can still do tough off camber trails without being concerned. Maybe one day I will have a T...but to make up for the long wheelbase id want 40s and set it up like OREs chevy truck on ultimate adventure, a hardcore wheeling machine with ultimate camping setup. for now ill camp on the ground an H3 with 125-140 lbs up top is asking for a disaster IMO

ok, I didn't take the time to read the whole thread....I did like the pics. What if I don't have "T"? Has anyone had any experience with using a roof top tent on an H3? I have a Gobi Stealth rack already, I'd like to mount it to that...Thanks...Joe

The guy who installed mine on my H1, said he had talked to a few Hummer H2 & H3 owners about installing roof top tents. He said that the factory roof rack were not reinforced enough to handle them. However you said you had a Gobi Stealth rack so that should work.

Not sure, I have only seen a few people use them on an H3. One was the guy in an article on hummerguy.net touring through south africa, and a few others. That is the one downside to the H3 or any regular 4x4. You have one place to mount it on the vehicle, on the roof. ****s up your COG. The thing I love about the H3T is that you can mount it in line of your roof, which is above the bed. It doesnt screw up your COG but the downside to a H3T is its wheelbase in tight rocky trails, but then one can argue its wheelbase helps in moab. Its a neverending pro and con debate.

Trailers are cool but I dont do much base camping unless I am in moab or an off road park like gorman. Otherwise I camp, pack up, wheel and go to the next spot, etc.

must have missed this...I did try out the RTT on my 3 for awhile. Since I already had the trailer I chose to move it there for a few reasons:

COG. This actually wasn't as big off-road because I don't rock crawl much. It was mostly body roll while driving. I already have quite a bit of weight up there (the roof rack itself weighs around 100#), but it was noticeable difference in roll w/the RTT.
Wind noise/resistance. Another seat-of-the-pants but noticeable difference. Even behind the front wing of the rack, it made more noise than usual. And crosswinds were more noticeable.
Getting in/out. Ever try climbing a 6' ladder in the middle of the night after drinking around the campfire? Ever try climbing back down at 4am because you were too drunk when you went to bed to remember to relieve yourself?
Ladder extension. You'll need one for the top of the truck.
Setup/takedown. It's MUCH harder to set up and take down the tent above your head. Hardest part was getting the cover zipper to close. Try doing that in in the morning in freezing temps after drinking the night before.

Don't get me wrong, having a RTT is awesome, but since I already had the trailer (and regularly tow it offroad), it was a no brainer for me. I've deliberated going back to a single rig/no trailer and I'll put the RTT back up top...but for now I like it lower.

Hahahahahah!
Yeah, the whole climbing up and down has crossed my mind! I was in Goblin Valley in the fall and kinda decided that it was my last trip sleeping on the ground. I'm 43 and have spent my share of time snuggling amongst the rocks at night. The more I think of it, the more I like the idea of a walk-in 8 man tent. Something borderline ridiculous to set up. A tent with 2 rooms, one for dirty gear and supplies and one for sleeping on a COT! The more I read the replies, the more I may take my tax return and get a larger walk-in. With the lil guy wanting to go with me, we could use the room if we catch a rainy day too.

I love my huge ass tent. Doesn't fly away in the wind, very sturdy, gear in one room and sleeping in the other or if I have more people you can use 2 rooms.

Pics don't do justice
