Plumbing Pipe Rack

OK so don't mind me, just running off Copenhagen Wintergreen some cheesecake and Wendy's right now and I have a PLAN!!! B^%$ and moaning about a roof rack going on 3 years now and I'm going to make a move. After hours of number crunching and drawing running out to the T and then and some more drawing I going to head over to Lowes in the AM and lay down some pipe (where have I heard that from before?) so the plan is pick up half inch 12 90 degree links, 16 T links and 2 60 degree link and make a some what looking GOBI rack. I have everything planned just need to up a mount plan and some flooring.

Two key goals I have in mind, one is have all the LED's mounted and second is be able to hold my body weight on the days I want to go fish on the edge of the river. Seems simple enough and I want to keeping welding to a minimum, for a fact I know the light mount need to be burned in and maybe the mount slash flooring.

Well wish me luck .

Oh yea plus I'll be swinging by Furmaker soon.

OK plan A crashed and burned so on to plan B!!! Plan is 65" length and 48" wide out of 1 1/4 pipe double stack like the GOBI and I'm going to try and 45 degree cut the corners. Going to get to work on it tomorrow.

I was just looking at the BajaRack material specs yesterday (very similar to Gobi it seems) and was thinking that I would pick some of the material up and get a local shop to put some 90* according to my specs and weld up my own rack with expanded metal as the base... I think getting someone to do the bends would take the homemade look/factor right out and be worth the extra $100 or so that it would cost to get done.. worth a thought

But good luck! looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Taking a break so here's where I'm at, changed out the corners for these.

So long to the old set up I'll miss it, not real sure what to do with it.

I bumped up the length now to 68" and I'll show you why.

Pretty much the center bar hangs pass the roof tack plastic and inch over.

Going to make the top half next and work out how the 40" is going to fit in.

OK made a lot happen today so tomorrow are the cross members and then the center links. Laid the frame on top of the expanded metal, looks like I knew what I was doing. :whaa:

I'm thinking of having 1 1/2 link bars to meet the top and bottom. Started on what to do with the front.

I'm really happy how it's coming along and a thousand thanks to frumaker on beating into my head on just making my own rack.

OK pretty much done and all that's left is the light tabs.

Anything worth doing is worth over doing!

This is how high it'll be off the roof, the onstar antenna is going to stick up from the floor some.

The top bar is going to be just like GOBI.

This is most of it.

I'll have it done with paint and lights on Sunday.

Looks great! One piece of advice on height off the roof. Yours looks about the same as mine - the Onstar antenna sticks through the expanded metal just slightly. Unless you protect it, it may (like mine) end up getting banged around and eventually crack and break. Also, I've found that I lose XM when driving South, block by the front of the rack. Just a few things to think about, learning from my mistakes :) Cheers!

Coming along nicely!

Any updates?!

Every this is all ready and just waiting for 10AM to link up with Frumaker. I'll take pictures on how it come along. I'm thinking to dub this the King Size GOBI with how much longer and thicker pipes. The T is all loaded up and I have about 20 feet of pipe to make my over hood/ fender brush guard next.

Great day with tons of work done.

We lay the frame on the roof and then got it all together.

Next was the center, this thing got heavy quick.

Then the floor.

Now on to the the top half.

The links for the top and bottom is an 1 3/4 more then enough room to grab it and jump on.

How it looks in it's new home.

Sitting in the carport waiting for paint in the morning.

So long day but all that's left is some grinding and holes in the mounts. As always thanks a bunch Frumaker.

Yeah that looks pretty darn good! If only there is a way to get those 90* bends to conform to the same size as the pipe
