New Problem. Uh-oh.

My H3 has been acting peculiar lately. Sometimes when I shift from park to reverse and then release brake it seems to not want to do it 100%. When I back up it gives a few small jolts before acting normal. It doesn't do it all the time. It seems to happen at night alot. Maybe tranny slipping? No problems when driving though. One thought I had is that maybe its jealous of my VX and is acting out a bit.

Check the diff crossmember. Yes, it is a common answer to many problems and it might apply here. Could be that the prop shaft is moving so much it is binding and not rotating but then settles in.

I would suspect your brakes before the tranny. But it doesn't hurt to check all of the things mentioned above

Hmm, Desert's suggestion makes sense too - a sticking caliper could cause an issue like this.

Luck. If the crossmember diff is bad, when backing up it can cause the front diff to raise up at the rear end, lifting the propshaft and binding the two. Or, when backing up, it simply turns properly without that lifting. If it is a loose or broken bolt it might work sometimes and not others.

Calipers might be sticky but not yet frozen. Heck, if all problems were consistent in their appearance then troubleshooting would be a breeze and mechanics would never say "I couldn't replicate the problem" :)
