New HF antenna for the QTH

Yesterday I went and got myself a new HF antenna for use at home or for portable use. I got an MFJ 2289 which basically is a *really* large set of "rabbit ears". It works from 6 - 40 meters and this morning my first DX contact was Madeira Island off the coast of Portugal on the 10 meter band.

This might be the best solution for me given my super strict HOA. The antenna sits on top of a 16 feet mast in a tripod, everything collapses down to a very manageable size when I'm not operating. When I want to get on HF, I place the tripod and antenna outside my patio, raise the mast and extend the ears and I'm all set. when I'm done, I take it all down in 5 minutes and remove it again.

Hey guys, have you seen this guys radio set up , it's amazing. the antenna looks like the one you posted but super modified!

Yeah I realized that after I went through the whole story. Nice set up he has though. I bet that thing can reach pretty far?

An Ameritron 811H. I'm hoping to get everything hooked up and configured this weekend. Despite my antenna being somewhat mediocre, I still can hear stations from, say, Europe and the south pacific and they can't hear me. So, an amp is about the only thing that's practical for me to do.

What is the HF rig ? I've been out of the hobby for a while !!

I *might* put a 2m rig in the H3 just because cell is limited at best where we wheel the most on the state game lands...I ran a Yaesu 7900R in my JK Unlimited, no trouble hitting several local repeaters from the game lands and that was with a glass mount antenna..

I ran a Palstar and loved it.....Almost bought myself a FT-2000 a couple years ago, was looking at the 200 watt version they are quite the rig..

I wondered if 10m was open...I'm on my way back to PA from Laredo,TX in the big blue Kenworth the skip has been running so hard that children's band (ch19) is about useless...which on most days is a good thing !

Lol! I've seen this truck before and thought of you. This is the closet I've gotten to it. Around the bottom there are so many wires hanging. Kinda looks like a bomb from Achmed the dead terrorist type. Uh Jeff Dunham.
