New camshaft in my h3t alpha

A little background.. I Was lucky enough to pick up a 10 alpha T earlier this year and have been playing around spending money on it... Airdoc, snugtop topper, predator winch system, gm perf exhaust (Borla)..etc. All fine and dandy, but for a v8 it really was a bit of a dog. It looked neat but didnt really sound mean or go like I wanted. Looked into a supercharger but the kit was discontinued and i wasnt comfortable trying to make it all work with no real supprt, and didnt want to hurt long term overall reliability with 100hp+ boost..(although it does sound like it would be awesome)

After a fair bit of pondering and net surfing, I decided a new camshaft from competition cams would be a decent way to go, with a bit more lift and duration. Basically what is referred to as an RV cam. Also considered heads, long tube headers, and anything else that popped into my feeble cranium, bet stuck with just the cam. And new valve springs to go along with it. And a cam phase limiter because it had vvt and i wanted to ensure no interference with the increased duration..

Its been a few months since installation and hptuners pcm update via pcm of nc.. Here is my report for anyone who cares...

Damn this truck is awesome now!

it sounds bad-ass, runs awesome, has way better touque and hp, and just makes me smile every time i turn the key. I dont have a dyno in the back yard but can say without a doubt this wasnt a 5-10hp increase, it is more like 30-40. The frist time i punched it with the new cam my head snapped back and euphoria set in. Its a total beast now. It has a bit of a lopey idle now too, which i like. With the borla exhaust, it just sits there and says "take me out and run over a prius. NOW!" Sure i dropped my economy a bit, but its optimized for torque not mileage. I may play with the hptuners file a bit to see if i can improve it a bit, but gas is cheaper now so its not quite so painful... 12.4 hwy averaging 70mph isnt the 17 it was getting before, but it sure is more enjoyable to drive.

if i ever get smart enough I will post a photo of my truck, IIRC.. No photo means my truck isn't real.. Btw I live in Michigan if anyone wants to go down the rabbit hole but needs to compare their alpha to a cammed one to see if its worth it for them. I found it to be a great mod, and makes the truck a keeper. The 8 cyl engine drives like one now :)

Hopefully this helps someone, or at least is interesting to one or two netizens. I usually just lurk but though it was time to share.

thats awesome. I am glad to hear it. I have a question for you on the hptuners. How hard is it to use? Do you have the standard or pro version?

Can you please post your cam specs? How is off Idle torque? Is it improved or hurt and are you running bigger tires?

The cam spec sheet is at work. Ill have to grab it And post the specs.

I am running on 33.5" tires. Off idle torque is greatly improved with this cam. Its a day and night difference with both torque and hp, pretty much across all rpm.

Hptuners is sick. There is a ton to learn, it seems user freindly enough. Not running pro, wasn't planning on getting a wideband and tweaking it to the max, but its upgradeable if i ever wanted to down the road. I suggest an email tune first so you can compare your stock file to a "professional" tune to get an idea of what they changed before you just start changing things and crossing your fingers.

I forgot i had pm'd pcm of nc from this forum and had my cam info in it.. Its a comp cam 189-400-13. Google that and the spec sheet is the top result.

Also could you provide where you ordered it from and how much everything was? Darn 17 to 12mpg you must be flooring it every chance you get, but I can't blame you i'd be doing the same.

Yeah I am a big fan of HP Tuners minus the price. Made a huge difference even for my stock motor, especially for removing the GM E-throttle lag.

How could you remove that lag? I think I still have it although I got pcmofnc to do the tune for me!

Derian The camshaft was from competition cams and was in the 8-900 range by the time I got the cam, springs, and phase limiter. Since yours is an 08 you don't need the phase limiter. A call to them would get you exact pricing, they are very helpful. I will have to work on a video with the idle sound, and maybe a 0-60 run from inside so you can check on the time. It seems pretty quick to me, but I haven't really checked it. I can take a video with my phone, but have never tried uploading one to this forum. Is it pretty easy? I'm not super techie guy.. :)

I'd love to hear what the Borla system sounds like. Please use a video camera & real mic if you can because cell phone mics will usually make any engine sound like a ricer (check out some on Youtube to see what I mean).

Very cool man!

The supercharger is great and wouldn't love my T as much as I do without it, but if I didn't have one I think this is the route I'd be going

Yeah but what if you did BOTH? More cam would actually take full advantage of that huffer!

A quick update on the mileage.. About the same time I switched cams, I switched the wheels and tires. I put on some mickey thompson ATZ P3's. It turns out they arent too good on snow/ice. So I put my old wheels and tires back on before driving it north this weekend, they are general grabber AT2's. Both are about 33.5" diameter. The Generals boosted my fuel economy tremendously, back close to where I was before the cam install. I haven't run a tank through it yet to calculate but its at least back to mid teens. Haven't changed anything on HPtuners, just switched the tires/wheels.

I Haven't done a video yet with sound/accelleration, and when I do I don't have a HD camera with a mic, so it will just be my phone.. But I am away from the truck for a week and a half or so now...

So, crappy video coming, but patience required :)

I'd like to know roughly what the installation labor hours/costs were.

Where did you have it done?

I noticed you said you were in Michigan, I also have a 2009 hummer H3T Alpha and am interested in a new cam. Did you install it yourself or did you have a company do it for you?

Just my .02. I put a Brian Tooley Racing stage 2 truck cam in my (now sold) '03 H2 and it was great. LS2 springs and milled the hell out of the heads. I did the install and tuning myself and couldn't have been happier.

Every time I would start it up in a parking lot, everyone would look around for a muscle car. Then realize it was the H2. Haha.

It took a bit over a day, i had a mechanic who works for me do it, im too challenged to get a video from my phone to upload. I tried to figure it out last year but gave up after a bit. Life is to short to learn everything i guess. There isnt much to the swap, i you tubed new cam in ls motor or something similar, and voila there was a guy putting in a cam in his old truck. Used the same "suicide" method he used of hoping none of the lifters dropped while exchanging cams worked for my truck. They all stayed put. You have to take the front off to slide the cam in and out, but isnt as bad as i thought it would be. Its definitely sounds better, and produces more power. It seems to be holding up well, the tune is great. thanks to pcm of nc. I put in the phase limiter (the 2010 is vvt, i dont think the prior years were) and beehive springs comp cams recommended with the install.
