Here's one of my favorite Clapton tunes. It originally appeared on his 1978 album Backless. Like many of his earlier singles, such as Layla, Bell Bottom Blues, and Wonderful Tonight, Promises was about his then wife Patti Boyd. Unlike those earlier songs, in which he wrote about his love for a woman he would eventually steal from his friend (she was married to George Harrison when they met), Promises was written when he had been dating her for several years and things weren't going so well. He ended up marrying Boyd in '79, but she left him in '84 after he had numerous affairs, and they officially divorced in '88. His addictions to heroin and alcohol probably factored in as well, as did the fact that Boyd was boinking Ronnie Wood before she and Harrison were divorced, and the fact that Clapton was banging Boyd's 17 year old sister Paula in the late 60's not long after they met. Whouda thunk their marriage would've ended badly? Go figure. It's lucky Clapton is such a good musician, because he was a dumbass when it came to his personal life :giggle:
