Misfiring and overheating

I took my 3 to my mechanic today to get a lot of things fixed but mainly misfiring and overheating. He was convinced that the overheating was resulting from the thermostat but after he changed it, it was still the same. The next thing was the misfire on cylinder 2 he swapped the coil pack with cylinder 1 but it stilled misfired on #2. So he thought it was the fuel injector so he changed that but it's still misfiring. I don't have a cracked head. So what could be causing everything??

Head gasket? Have you had the coolant checked for the presence of blow by? What does the plug look like?

Overheating could be a clogged radiator. You mud ride a lot in Georgia so its possible the fins are clogged with mud.

I asked several times if it was the head gasket and he said no every time. The plugs should be fine cause I replaced them a few months ago and he would probably notice if the plugs were bad

He said the temperature was constant at 210 on the dot at idle so I don't it would stay that constant if it was a clogged radiator

head gasket is really easy to check with the test kit they make for that purpose.

burned valve
a bad replacement coil
bad wire
bad plug
broken control wire to the coil
intake gasket leak

those are the things that pop to my head immediately

Try swapping plugs from 2 to 1. Did you use AC Delco Iridiums? Overheating - is there pressure in the coolant lines, are they getting hot?

He swapped it but it was still on 2 and I did use ac delco. I don't know about the pressure in the coolant lines but pressure in the engine is normal. He thought it was the thermostat because he was grabbing both of the hose and I forgot what he said but one was hotter than the other.

I would vote swapping actual plugs as well. Might be a bad plug or just not gapped correctly. The overheating like said already; I would really spray out those fins especially with all the mudding done in that truck...

I'm wondering if you simply have a bad radiator and need a replacement spark, wire, cop and/or injector...possibly a combination of these. Also some techron could do you wonders. Well the H3 anyway lol!Chris

Does your mechanic know that bad head gaskets and cracked heads are pretty common in the I5 engine? It was the first thing I thought of when I read the post.

He said the intake valve in cylinder 2 is leaking air. So I think I'm just gonna replace my whole head. He's doing it for around 1500

What codes did you have? Also how did he come to that conclusion? Leaking valve wouldn't cause the truck to overheat

He says its overheating but I told him its normal for h3s to run a little under 3/4. But he keeps saying it is. So that's probably a separate problems from the valves.

And he did a compression test all the other cylinders were fine except for 2

$1500 is a smoking deal.

I would strongly suggest a piston soak before you went that route though. If it's just the one valve and it's the intake I put money on it that it just has carbon build up. Marvel Mystery Oil down the spark plug holes let sit for "some time" at least 1 hour 24 hours is better. Leave the plugs out, pull the fuel relay, turn it over to get the excess out (last step is voluntary not necessary). Seafoam spray intake cleaner will do the same thing with the carbon, you spray down into the intake after the MAF sensor. MMO works better I have found. Takes longer but works better and also has lubricating properties the seamfoam doesn't.
Be aware you will smoke out your entire neighborhood as all the carbon build up burns off.

A leaking intake could in theory make the engine run very lean. Which "could" attribute to some overheating. I wouldn't say a constant 30 degrees though. If you have someone with software (Hp tuners or similar) that could monitor knock plus how much number 2 is retarding to prevent the knock you can see how bad that cylinder really is.

Again smoking deal for head replacement but I would hold off until you just tried to free up that valve other methods. If your coolant isn't disappearing I am pretty confident that your head is still good.

Lots of red flags here. A compression or leak down test should've been one of the first things done. Are you getting credited for the charges on the unnecessary coil pack and injector? If you go ahead, get his $1500 price in writing as a firm price...not as an estimate and get the number off your head first.

I agree, replacing entire head over one intake valve "leaking" ?? Engine running warm so lets replace the whole damn thing..... seems very odd to me. Maybe there is more to the story though.

The guy is great hes a really reputable mechanic in my area. So I trust what he says. He said something about its not worth it just replacing one valve so he wanted me to get all of them replaced. So I suggested on just replacing the whole head since I do already have close to 100k on the 3. And he said it would probably be cheaper that way too. He'll give me a call later he's researching it right now.
