I took off my skid plate today to paint it and when I took it off I notice there is a leak.

Is this serious?

What could be causing it?

Does it look like its coming from the steering rack or is from somewhere above the rack?

Looks like a front main seal to me or oil pan

It looks like it's coming from the round belt thing (don't know much about cars) but I checked the oil level and it's full... So should I get it fix or is it not that serious?

Crankshaft seal, I think. Should get it done but it isn't an emergency. Mine was dripping pretty good when it failed.

So you think I'll be fine for like a month or so without repairing it?

Wipe it down to pin point where it's coming from. The RTV on the front of your oil pan looks to be torn near the middle. Also u might try some over 75k motor oil which has additives to stop some small oil leaks on higher mileage engines.

If it is crankshaft seal, it's a bit of work, 2-3 hours. Radiator has to be pulled, fan removed, harmonic balancer (the pulley) pulled, new seal put in, reassembled. The seal is not expensive. Add in cost for new coolant (if it isn't saved or if you accidentally dump dirt in it, like I did) and maybe a new belt since you're already removing it.

Park with cardboard under it to catch the leak and keep an eye on it. You can probably drive the month with it

I just called a local shop, and the guy quoted me 200 to repair the crankshaft seal. That seems fair to me

Ya that's a smoking deal.
Around here most of the time shops hear Hummer they groan and I get quoted for an outragous amount. I had my entire exhuast done a few years ago by a local shop for $180. I went back a few months ago to the same shop because a bolt broke off on the header below the head surface so it needed to be drilled out. They wanted $400 to do that. Under new management now. I didn't even say a word just walked out.

$200 for that is a great deal.

Sorry for hijacking this thread but this is just about the only thread on the old interweb about the H3 harmonic balancer and I didn't want to start one. To remove the harmonic balancer, any three jaw puller will do and is simple to do. Standard lefty loosey, righty tighty and a $#!% ton of elbow grease and a breaking bar. Like one hell of a breaking bar. I used a 6ft piece of pipe to bust that thing loose. Now to install theres the real headache. The balancer bolt is long, like really long before you actually get to the threads on the inside of the crank so your standard universal harmonic balancer installer kit won't do the job. You need tool Part# J41478. It's pricey but needed unless you can find a hardware store that sells that specific piece of all thread and a nut and washer so you can press the balancer back on. Thought this might help someone down the road. I still can't believe how long that bolt is.

Hold on guys I may have found a cheap alternative option. The thread specs on the harmonic balancer bolt is M16 2.00 pitch. Now Amazon has a LSX, LS1, LS2.... harmonic balancer install tool part# is 14027T with the same specs. It's $14.99 compared to $100. I'll let ya'll know soon how it works.

Great news guys! The harmonic balancer install tool part# 14027T works great. So the guys that want to fix a leaky front oil seal or timing chain gasket or a malfunctioning harmonic balancer can save some dough and buy 14027T instead of the J41478. And to add a little knowledge incase someone out there is trying to figure out why their belt tensioner keeps sporadically jumping up and down even after replacing it with a new belt tensioner. Take a look at all of your pulleys. Make sure they're free of any play, up down side to side. If all pulleys check out like mine did then you have a failing harmonic balancer. It make look like it's spinning true on the outer ring with no visible signs of failure but the inner may start to look like it's wobbling. I thought it was the bolt causing the visual appearance of a wobble but it turns out the rubber gasket was failing. Hope this helps someone down the line.
