Is this K5 Blazer Solid Axle a Good Deal/Candidate for a SAS swap?

Hey guys,

I came across a guy parting out a K5 Blazer with a D44 for $200

Here are some pics:

Do you guys think that this would be a good place to start for a solid axle swap? What I am curious about is how much I would need to spend building this up before it would be ready for installation. i.e. rebuilding the diff with a locker, new bearings, gearing, new knuckles and brake parts.

If I were to pick this unit up and rebuild it would I just nickled and dimed to death and spend more then if I were to wait for a built axle to pop up?

Thanks!

Regarding the axle, I think it depends on how crazy with the rebuild parts you want to get, you can spend 4k rebuilding it, or 8k with fancy parts and what not.

What year blazer is it out of?

The seller says it's a 1973
It has disc brakes which is a plus, but he does not know the gear ratio in it.

If he or you can locate the bom numbers on the tube it would help you verify what it came with from the factory by looking up the build specs. Mine is also from a 73. I believe it would have the small bearing spindles from the factory.

For what it is worth, for $200 I would probably pick it up as a spare if it was local to me. I cant comment on rebuild prices because most of the work was done for me by the previous owner but as others mentioned it would definitely vary depending what you wanted to put into it.

You can do a complete rebuild on that axle for around $2500. That’s for all new bearings, seals, etc. SAS brackets, gears, locker, and brakes would be additional.

A 73 should have the small bearing outers (although they are often changed). Nothing wrong with the small bearing rig. It’s also most likely a small tube (2.75” dia.) housing...also fine for most off-roading.

Gears are most likely 3.08, and you can check by rotating the yoke and counting how many turns it takes for one turn of the rotor. It will also be stamped in the edge of the ring gear. The carrier will most likely be useless since it has the wrong offset for any gears above 3.92...so plan on a 4-series carrier, whether you run a locker or open diff.

Brakes are irrelevant since you would most likely be running Hummer brakes. Hubs are the only parts you reuse.

Look for a passenger side flat top knuckle...that’s a bonus. You’ll need one for crossover steering. I buy a lot of these axles in the $200-$500 range...very common and they fit the H3 well.
