I don't think you can get an I5 from GM anymore. One recent replacement from a non-forum member was a Jasper engine. With install, and fixing many other issues, it was a chunk of change approaching $10K.

06 H3 had a 5.3 from a wrecked GM SUV owned by a forum member, and I believe he got this 6.2 from a junkyard.

With that kind of cost an LS V8 replacement is justified, IMO. I don't think the I5 is a bad engine. It's just that GM gave up on it due to economy reasons, and maybe other reasons. I had an '86 Jeep Comanche with a 2.8L feedback carb engine with about 115 HP and it was so under-powered it wasn't funny. Great driving truck at the time but steep grades had to be climbed in third gear at 45MPH max. My 3T can at least keep the speed limit up steep grades in comparison. And to add to the topic in the last 20K miles out of the 118K miles driven I've had to replace the PS pump and throttle body in my ten years of ownership along with normal maintenance items like oil changes and tires.

Interesting you bring up jeeps as I drove a new Cherokee with the 2.4l and a 9 speed and that thing also felt ridiculously underpowered. Going through the Sierra Nevada’s i had the pedal on the floor far more often than I would’ve liked.

I have no issue with the I5 besides going up grades, even more so at highway speeds. Off-road I feel it is very decent in putting power down, just runs a little hot.

I’m currently at 167,000 and have a leaky rear main seal. Other than that the motor has been stupid reliable. Hopefully the motor will hold up over the next couple years, the plan is to throw in a 5.3. Since it’ll be becoming a project car as soon as I get another daily.

I agree with you about the I5. I think that GM giving up on the engine is the only reason for a different engine swap. I think Alex is probably right about crate I5's no longer being available. I would've gone with the Alpha if I couldn't have found an M5 with the I5. I think that has made a big difference in the performance of this truck and the way I use it.

Just picked up an 07 3.7 with 120,000 miles. Killer price. Then found out the engine wiring harness has been crushed and randomly shorts different systems. So ebay wiring harness from 06 (hope it's the same, oem is discontinued) and about $1700 labor, back is going in for fusion in a month so no can do myself
