Help! My wipers are possessed!!!

Ok, this is wierd! Today when I started my truck the wipers started right up. Figured they had been left on last time it was used, but no, the switch was off! Turned it on and back off, and they kept going. And they aren't steady, either. They move about an inch and stop, then a full wipe, then stop straight up, then a few wipes, then stop for a minute, then move an inch, 6 inches, half inch, full wipe, and on and on! Just completely erratic.

After driving about 10 minutes they started working properly. When we got where we were going it sat for about three hours. When started back up to go home it did it again for a few minutes and then was normal again. And THEN, the rear wiper decided to just come on by itself. then it got bored with that and started spraying washer fluid in the rear too.

Stopped for gas, and when restarted the rear wiper came on and was spraying right away. This time the sprayer wouldn't stop, and ran thew tank dry. I had to stop and pull the fuses for the rear wiper and washer fluid.

Anyone run into this one before? I am guessing it is going to be some control module somewhere is bad. I have a $100 deductable on the warranty, I'm wondering if it would be cheaper to find the module and replace it, or just take it in. Definately need to get it fixed soon, as we are going on a short trip in a couiple weeks, and will for sure need wipers!

More than likely it is the wiper module. Very common with earlier 2's. When mine went went out they would not stop and emptied the w/s washer reservoir. I have heard of people pulling them apart, letting them dry out and then siliconing them. I just replaced it

I've just been sitting here googling like crazy, and I found a lot of threads on the old boards about that. That is exactly what it is. I looked up the part on gmparts.com and it is $165. My warranty deductable is $100, so I think I'll just let them do it. And maybe they will just change the whole motor! Then when I get it back I will probably take that cover off and seal it up. Should be good to go then!

I've had the same problem, when there is moisture in the air or light rain, my wipers used to freak out every once and a while, even stop mid wipe. Usually wasn't to bad because it happened on days that I needed them. So next time it freaks out, I think I will pull the motor and open it up and then sealed it, but I have not had the problem in a long time.

Yeah, it's pretty wierd! I might try to dry it out and seal it and see what it does. I just don't want it flipping out on our trip!

Well, took it into the dealer last night, and they confirmed it was indeed the wiper module. I also had them check the CEL that has been on. It has been throwing the evap system code. Figured it was the vent filter down by the frame. They ordered the module, and I took it back this morning for the work.

They replaced the module, and it turned out the pressure sensor on top of the tank was bad, and the vent tube and canister were replaced as well. All told it was over $800. All covered under my GMPP warranty, so it cost me $108, deductable and tax. :woot:

So, no more CEL, and I once again have full control of my wipers and washer fluid!

Once more I have been very happy with my local dealer here.

Glad to hear it is fixed. Once the module is replaced, it shouldn't be an issue with the updated part
