More Pics

Here are a few more shots. The sign in the 5th picture indicates trail closed - oops. I had a great day - learned a lot. Maybe I should rename my truck, "The Little Hummer that Could". We had a lot of class rigs out there in rock heaven. Oh, by the way my "Serv 4WD" DIC warning cleared after the drive back to LA from Boron. No problems since. Onboard computer must have figured out where the gears were again!

You and your rig did very well! I hope people don't read into the sign too much. It was missing on the other side of that part of the canyon so we didn't know until it was too late. Yeah, I remember it on previous trips but my landmarks keep getting removed with every rain storm. I didn't even recognize the v-notch entry until I was right on it this time.

Nice pictures greg! Thanks for sharing. Luckily the electrical glitches werent putting you in "limp mode." I had the same weird issues as you back in bishop but since then I havent had an issue.

Btw that name sounds great! We have "the little engine that could" (Craig) so "the little hummer that could" is open and all yours

Here are some of the pictures I took. I had the GoPro HD video camera but I didn't get a chance to use it. Should have gotten it out when Craig did the hill but I was too busy watching and then pulling on a tow strap.

Here is where we started.

Stitch and I were the first to arrive, so we got aired down.

The trail closed sign facing the other way. It really wasn’t that bad,

although Chris needed help from his co-pilot.

Part of the line of Hummers (and an FJ).

This hill looked ominous,

Zach charging up the hill.

The hole next to Zach’s rear drivers tire is the Craig Hole. There was an ridge of rock that Craig’s front tire went up just as his rear tire went down and things got very interesting. One of the built Jeeps made it up on hit third attempt right after Craig. This obstacle seemed to be easier with the longer wheelbase, plus Craig showing us where not to go.

Thanks for the compliment and I will remember that tip about the highest point. Aren't most closure signs one way? Actually, I don't recall one on the way in.

I am glad that you brought that up. Being president and all, cbetts could get the club legal department on me for moniker infrigement! Just kidding - happy with what I got!

Maybe its the BLM's way keeping the trail one way possibly? I can see the use of the sign, the trail isn't super difficult for a normal vehicle until you start hitting all the rock gardens at that point. Look at the road we took up the mountain on the last bishop trip, without that 4WD High clearance sign many tourists wandering around the park above would have been in trouble going down that route...

My friend Dave got alot of video on his gopro..he actually had 2 of them, one was mounted to my windshield and he would take the other one out with him to shoot vids of us..we mounted one on the outside of my truck for awhile, then he stuck it on Chris's rig, and then on Kurts. He said to give him a few weeks to get it edited but the final product should be good

I have been in contact with Hatch and Maral, the owners of Safari Straps

Hatch was the cool gentleman that grabbed hold of my rock rail to keep me upright. Apparently I have a video coming in the mail with the teetering incident all recorded.

Make sure to swing by their web page. :link:

Any chance at getting them as a sponsor? I would be more than willing to step up and support them

I'll post them tonight, I have some panoramic pictures I have to scale down because they're huge [20K pixels across] by the time they get scaled for web use, they're tiny so I'm going to work on a happy medium:

It is really amazing the difference a good camera makes in the quality of pictures. Let me know if you want me to host the larger images. I have resourcesto spare on my web server.

A good camera helps but only buys you so much, it's like offroading, it's 80-90% the guy behind the wheel/lens vs the equipment itself :)

Some of my favorite pictures was taken with an old Fuji finepix point and shoot because that was all I can afford at the time, and it did a good job.

I'm up for doing v-notch as part of a small group, but I'd feel more comfortable having a winch installed on my truck first in case I really get jammed.
