Do you already have a roof rack? If not, why not go that route first so you would could carry a lot more than on a spare tire rack.

I'd be real careful about loading a rack mounted that way; it's looks like a great lever for springing the back door out of shape.

Hats what I decided, I got super close to buy materials for the rack I wanted

But you can do way more with the roof rack and it looks better

I'd use that tire rack for an ice chest to keep my beer and food I been wanting to make one like hunner's and use one of them already made hitch racks and make a bracket like his.

Recon runs a 40" spare, I doubt a small rack would do anything to the rear door, it's sturdy. I have a 37" spare with no problems.
That rack is cantilevered on an arm from the center of the spare flange, so its load on the door is the result of much higher dynamic forces at a pot hole than the spare, which is fixed. I'd add a formed piece from the basket to the flange, between the spare and the door skin, to make it a "sandwich" and more rigid (assuming the wheel studs would be long enough). I've seen similar racks on Jeeps, but never saw any cantilevered like that.
