Here is the highly anticipated trip report for our very eventful and long day. We started off by meeting at the Discovery Center. We had 5 H1's, 4 H2's and 5 H3's. We had some entertainment there from a guy yelling at us. As Dave put it, he must have had a magical mushroom patch in the forest.

We finally got started on the trail about 10:30. This trail was far more technical and challenging than when we ran it in March. We hit our first obstacle, The Ledge. This is where we encountered our first carnage. A bent tie rod on a H2
027.jpg

After replacing that we all got through with no other issues. We made it up to the Talus Rock Garden with no problems. Once in the garden, we had another bent tie rod on a H2
053.jpg

And then found out one of the H1's broke a rear half shaft. This set us back quite a bit. Instead of having the H2 come through the garden, we had him take the bypass.

From this point on is where it really went crazy. As if we didn't already have enough issues. Once we got to where the bypass met up with the trail, he was nowhere in site. After a brief conversation, we decided to send Serge and Jared back down the bypass to look for him. I took the rest of the group up to see if he continued on. We hit a major obstacle that we felt he probably wouldn't have been able to get himself through. Luckily I got the group with me. We were all tree huggers on this one. We finally ended up at the bottom of the trail. Serge and Jared had also had no luck finding him. My group went back around the trail head and Serge and Jared headed back down the trail. Once to the trail head, Anthony and I started back up to see if we could find him. We met Serge and Jared just before The Ledge with no luck. Went back down the to the trail head and finally got a call from him. He was off the trail.

At this point we learned that the H'1s were having an issue with a blown tire. So we went back up the backside of the trail to give them a hand. Found out that Dave had already blown a tire and this was the second one. By this time it had turned into a night run. The last obstacle and click click click from Serge. At this point, no one could believe it. Twisted front prop shaft and possible transfer case and would not go into gear. This was extremely time consuming getting Hamster out of the way to bring a H1 past him to pull him up. Well, it didn't work. At this point, we sent up a H2. With the two hooked up together with straps and managed to pull him up. Mikkel ended up towing Serge off the trail.

Okay, finally we a free and clear nothing else can happen. Wrong! Just before the end of the trail one of the H'1s punctured another tire and was leaking. We did get off the trail to the fire road, where we had to change it. I think we finally hit the pavement around 11:45. Wanted around at the gas station with for his ride home. There were some good laughs at this point. Serge had to get spotted pulling Hamster up

Anthony, Dave, Mikkel and myself finally ended up leaving Big Bear at 2 am.

Total damage for the day.
2 tie rods
3 tires
1 half shaft possibly 2(Serge)
1 front prop shaft
2 transfer cases?
1 mirror
1 tow strap
Dents and scratches galore

If i have missed anything, hopefully some of the others will chime in. Was a long and tiring day. But was fun

Now to some pictures. Most of my pictures are from the first part of the day after that was way to busy getting people through the trail

moral of the story: it's an expensive hobby, somedays are chicken salad other days are chicken ****. If you wheel long enough you will all take your turn and get flat-bedded out (AAA is your friend!).

broken tie rods -- easy on the gas buddy, if it bounces, that's bad...and, dare I say...maybe bring tools and spares?

broken halfshaft -- trying to take short cuts to swap it often ends up taking more time than just doing it right the 1st time. Ooops.

flat tires -- street tire's sidewalls do not like rocks.

lost h2 -- really? You just drive away and not tell anyone? Next time wait (or use smoke signals/carrier pigeon/sat phone/mental telepathy/bad breath)

hunger/cold -- one never knows when a night run opportunity presents itself...e.g. last night! Bring more food/warm clothes at 7000'

very angry and bitter guy hating on us -- boot to the head!

baby killing -- I have nothing but admiration for he who's deductive reasoning can get from offroading to killing children.

Great writeup Zach, thanks much! This run really underscored the importance of being prepared. Be prepared for being out on the trail *much* longer than anticipated. Be prepared to let friends and family know that you are ok but will be late. Be prepared to communicate with your group. Be prepared for flat tires and breakage. Be prepared to work your a** off and have fun doing it. Be prepared to have a great time with your friends and be prepared to make new friends

You have us curious now. What was the assclown saying?

he was talking about our moms and how we kill babies by driving vehicles with engines in them. Though I have to admit that it was somewhat refreshing to hear that his loathe is not limited to hummers...he apparently hates anything that requires fuel.

So, he was just another fool that believes everything that the media tells him. I feel sorry for those people that are too stupid and disconnected from reality to think for themselves. Truly sheep being led to their own slaughter.

I don't think it had anything to do with the media. Apparently the one forest ranger knew the guy and had said he has been a problem before. Just a crazy loon living on the mountain eating wild mushrooms and bear dung

Damn, what a day/night. Sorry to hear about all the stuff that went wrong but glad to hear that everyone is OK and that everyone helped each other off the trail - the positive thing is that the rigs can all be fixed.

Apparently he had given a group of Jeepers a similar earful as they set out on a large scale event to take kids out on the trails. Im surprised how much he managed to get me worked up. I should not have let him get to me.

Well I didn't get many pictures on this run.

Started out nice. The drive up was nice, had some drizzle until we got up above the cloud layer.

As for the run it was not at all what I anticipated but it was good to see the group work together to get every rig off the trail.

The poor guy that punctured two tires had just bought his H1. He had one spare tire. Unfortunately he did not realize he did not have the special socket for his custom lug nuts. He abused several sockets of nearly equivalent size to get them off but it took forever. Fortunately we had enough spare lug nuts between everyone to take care of him. Pretty frustrating rookie day for the guy. I had to take a truck that was not a trail truck for me. It had MT tires on it, which suck. Oh well, now I have one less tire I don't like.As too the nut job at the Discovery Center...who knows, mushrooms, lack of oxygen, his mother didn't breast feed him, it could be anything but this guy was looney tunes. Because we drove fuel driven vehicles instead of bikes we were called everything from homos to baby killers. Guy grabbed his crotch more often than Michael Jackson. Anyone trying tonpick a fight with a group of 20 guys is off his rocker.

Zach usually tries that ... but they are all boyscouts ;)

Sorry for all the problems, but nothing is a greater teacher than experience. Everyone on that run learned things they wont soon forget and all that experience will trickel down to others you wheel with in the future. Gotta look at it on the bright side, nobody was injured and you are all wiser from the day :)

Sounds like a crazy day. I really wish I met this guy though, I am getting pretty good at dealing with the *******s of society. I would just take this day as a learning lesson. One of the best mods you can do is a set of spare parts and trail tools. I learned that the hardway. Another great idea is change out parts in your driveway so when you have the pressures, anxiety and all the other unpredictable factors that can occur you have already done a change on parts before. I have done tie rods, halfshafts, rear diff work and front diff work all in the driveway...If I had to learn on the trail I would be screwed. Also take ron's advice get AAA if you dont have it....tows can get expensive quickly especially when far away from home...I learned that lesson the hardway too and its a waste of money...

I say head to the hills and practice on a really steep driveway. Try it blindfolded...then drunk. When you can do it blindfolded AND drunk, you are ready.
