Can someone please explain to me how the cooling fan clutch works. I've always had electric fans so this is new to me. Thanks.

I went out and inspected the clutch... I spun the fan. It had some smooth resistance. I'm assuming that's how its supposed to be.

Mine felt okay when I spun it by hand, but while it was running it made an odd noise..so I replaced it and the noise went away..If you need the tools, Alrock has the ones I sold him.

Thanks Dennis. I remember reading something somewhere that you replaced everything on the front of the motor... I think my tensioner might be making some excess noise. Which one did you use, ac delco?

When it's foggy or moist in the morning my H3 will make some belt noise. Once my H3 warms up the sound goes away. I'll be removing my fan/fan clutch as soon as my PCM fan comes in and I get my PCM back from being flashed.

a pcm tune is in my future. I have some maintenance issues that need to be taken care of first... I will have the tune before I get 35s. id like that fan too but I think I need to use that $400 elsewhere. I need ucp/sliders and some other off-roading specific stuff. ive turned my H3 into a self-induced money pit. theres so many things I want...and to think I told my girlfriend that I wouldn't have to do anything to the H3 when I bought it... boy was I naïve... lol

I know you just asked this of Dennis, but I can chime in that I just replaced (okay, Reloader did the work) the belt, tensioner and idler pulley on my truck. All were Gates parts. The tensioner pulley was worn out and making noise.

Thanks alex... I believe I saw a pic of the specialty wrenches for the fan clutch... I saw it while I was searching "fan clutch"....

I wasn't sure what would be an acceptable replacement for the pulley/tensioner.... Didn't know if ac delco made one or not...

I'm sure they do, but I was pressed for time. I like Gates for belts and the other items were readily available at O'Reilly, so that's how I made my choice.
