I drove up Walker Pass last week, not really a steep climb, 2500 to 5250 feet. 73 degrees ambient, 55 mph. I hit 240 on my trans temp. Should I be concerned? It cooled off going down the other side. Chris what kind of high temps have you seen to this point?

Wow, thats cooking. Have you ever done it in similar conditions with the OEM setup? I know you recently added the temp gauge so maybe your couldnt monitor it?

As of now I will run 204 max around town and to school and work thats in 90-100 degree weather and its heating up over here! 103 today. Its much better then before I could hit 240 doing the same things around town and to/from school and work, normally I run 185-190. As far as max temp I have hit was 240 also (might of been 238-239 to be exact.) I hit that going to big bear a few weeks ago, I went up the backside (JV side) BAD IDEA! Loaded down with a bunch of crap, 50mph headwinds and crawling up a steep grade I was doing 30 the whole way up its much steeper then the 210 side of Big Bear. Kept shifting back and forth into different gears so I finally put it in 1st then held 2nd and would manually shift to avoid the constant shifting and that helped with temps.

I notice the trans cools off MUCH quicker then the OEM setup and is runs cooler then stock 99% of the time but every so often the cooler meets its match with headwinds and steep grades. The next hottest temp I saw was 219 coming home from king of the hammers, again steep grades, headwinds and loaded down with camping gear. Other then that I will see 204 max. In the 5 months I have had it I say 240 once and 219 once. Personally I think the setup I have is perfect for 99% of the time but the 1% can do the damage. I may add another cooler like reloader did.

Stacking them on top of each other and have spacers between the bolts holding them together. For 50 bucks it might be worth it. Other option would be put it in 3rd gear manually and hold it in 3rd going up the pass. I noticed when I hold a gear the temps will start to go down.

Kinda off topic but friday my parts should be here for my engine cooling mod. Its about 75 bucks shipped, involves no fans or new radiators. I think you will like it. If I still have engine and trans cooling problems then I will add the pusher fans like the south african H3 rigs have. OEM puller mechanical fans like we have plus 2 pusher fans in front.

It just ticks me off if we could regear this would solve our trans temp problems. My brother was running hot like us too, he regeared to 5.13s from 3.73 and his problems went away. If you run 35s 4.88 gears would be ideal in the diffs and 5.13s for 37s but unfortunately we dont have that option.

Yes regearing will remove so much strain of the transmission, everyone here tells me how much bigger tires reduce trans life (esp since temps hit 125+ in the summer)

240 is the highest I've seen since installing the Scangauge. For now I'll monitor it. Maybe if I climb again I can hold it in third or second, that's a good idea. Going to get hot this summer!

Are you increasing your coolant capacity?

sent you a PM.

I will post up the plan tomorrow.

As for the trans I would hold the gear and see what happens. I notice on hills the trans likes to jump from gear to gear. Supposedly the PCM tune helps a lot with that because they can adjust shift points. I need to do that.

Are you making the "hood louver" a true vent? If you are be careful about water pooling on top of our favorite I5 lol

nope I will just spill it, Its nothing crazy but its a thermostat relocation and with a cooler stat. If that doesnt help then I will add pusher fans

yea its pricey, I may go to a local rad shop in the valley. They made my buddy a custom aluminum one for his YJ. it was around 400 bucks installed. I could bring them the radiator and have them replicate it for cheaper. I have heard nothing but great things on quality and price from those guys.

You guys need to get the pcm tune if you don't have it. I live in a hilly area also and I dont have any problems holding a gear.

I live in Michigan and haven't had my Hummer all that long. When it jumped to into the 80's last week mine never passed the halfway point. Last winter I did put a new OEM rad in it and had it flushed and refilled with dexcool. But you most of you are out west where it's in the 100's so I'm feeling for your issues. When I built my big 1 ton years ago running 500hp from a big block 427 I ran a 4 core with a clutch fan and 2 pushers in front with an external trans cooler and ran the hell out of it and never overheated. And my 427 was built up nice. Our H3's even have down flow rads and you all are still overheating I would def find a rad shop and have one made that really works like 06H3 said his buddy did in his jeep. 4 bills seems more than worth it.

06 H3 - Do you have any updates on how the trans cooler worked out during the summer months? Are you still running the single cooler with no fan?

Yes single cooler no fan. I was running 240 temps everyday now on average I would see 205-210 max but that's in 100+ temps and steep freeway grades. Normal driving in the summer I would stay below 200

I moved my thermostat into a new housing up by the airbox. It is easier to get at now, but in cold winter the engine takes longer to heat up. If I did it again I would use the same aftermarket thermostat housing, but put it inline at the bottom of the radiator. I think that would be a good trade off between accessibility and function. It may take skid plate removal to get to it, but not removing the wheel and inner fender liner.

Installed the Tru Cool 4589 on mine. As an FYI I just ordered a Scanguage from Advance Auto Parts, they have a $50 off coupon for online orders right now code WD511. It came out to $116 with tax, running to pick it up on lunch.

I was going to go with this one originally but I thought it was too big and might over cool the fluids. I'll assets this once this summer is over and see how the one I have behaves I don't tow or do anything crazy so I think I should be fine

Torres
Im running the 30K cooler, I think its perfect for 35s and summer weathers that exceed 100! Trans temp dropped significantly to safe levels. Someone running 37s or towing would probably need the 40K cooler.
