I was reading on one of the other hummer forums that a while ago 4digr put a dana 44 in his stock height but required custom CVs, crossmember and to cut the skidplate. Does anyone know if that was a high pinion or low pinion?

I PMed him a while back with no answer....Idk if he left the hummer scene or not.

It was a high pinion...the most detailed thread was on HXC. I used a low pinion. We tried a HP but the oil pan was an issue.

I'll try to find a picture that shows it, but will a little google search or two you might be able to find a better demonstration of it. I guess I should also have discussed reverse cut gears as well.

Yes, adding the fact that HP's run reverse cut would negate the drive/coast issue.

Not for our h3's but figured I would post up a picture of the project we are working on. Its a HP dana 30 we are building to be a direct bolt in for the S10 series chevy trucks and SUVs. Mostly directed towards the guys with the "zr2" package. We had to move the pinion over almost 1.25" and are nervous that the diff might not clear the motor now but we will see soon.

I don't know if this will help - but we hung the rough cut diff first before we finalized the axle tube length. Once the short side fit and was right, then we cut the other side, positioning the diff under the pan with the proper clearance was the first priority.

How it started out

and how it finished up and compared to the OEM version

Thanks for the pics, I remember seeing them in your build thread. Hopefully someday they will come out with a kit to turn our lil H3s into a beast like yours!

The shop we are working with to build the diff was given specific measurements by us but decided to change them last minute out of what they said was necessity. As you found out though moving the pinion to far over causes problems with everything from the housing making contact to the driveshaft hitting the oil pan. Ugh good thing I like a challenge.
