Met at backcountryislife'shouse in the mountains for one last trail before the snow. Was excited to take a run with my new Recovery Vehicle (Kaleb's Jeep) and show up a few Jeeps. And then RIGHT at the first obstacle....

Well, there's a time for everything... this was my very first broken halfshaft. It wasn't even pushed hard, I think it was probably just hanging on and couldn't handle anything else. We pushed it a lot harder in Moab... but... my front locker WAS on, that was probably a mistake.

Of course, this proves the law that you only break parts that you don't pack. Since this run was so close to home (ok, not that close, an hour away) I didn't pack my spare axles, they were sitting in my garage. D'oh! My h3 spent the day sitting in backcountryislife's driveway (you can drive in slow 2wheel drive, in 4 high locked, with the axle broke. I moved it back there to wait for parts), while I did a round trip back to Denver (my wife had to drive up the chaser car), and then came back to swap the axle.

The great thing about this story is that we were a little stuck on how to get everything apart and the halfshaft out-- but luckily backcountryislife's jeep friends showed up after they finished the trail, and knew just how to get that thing swapped. It took 3 of us to knock the wheel bearing loose once we got it unbolted.

Well, those are the only pics *I* got from the trail... was a little embarrased my axle broke aqt the first obstacle and had to turn around. But that's wheelin' some days!

Well...
day went a little better for me, but not quite as good as I'd have hoped.

The rubi was amazing in most areas, BUT... as we got to high altitude it just plain started sucking.

The 3.8 motor somehow is a little stronger than the h3's I-5 on the road, but even with a 4:1 t case, the jeep was lurchy, and required way more scrubbing of the clutch than I prefer, it was really disappointing, but at least the saving grace is that I CAN change gears... because it NEEDS it. I'd say the Jeep with a 4:1 is amazing until we hit 10k feet for some reason, then it falls on it's face. It had tons of power, and would crawl like crazy in Moab, and even at the bottom of the trail here, but at the top (12kish feet) it's like having the H3 without a 4:1.

Shopping for 5.38's today!

Gotta love lockers... made it up!

Not without a LITTLE carnage anyhow!

Then came home & got to play with CV joints! Glad we got it all fixed!

You guys need to make a "Reality" show for offroaders.
It could be an episode of a "Road to Far"
The Colorado Triangle.
