Hello all,

Need some advice again!!! I'm trying to upgrade my battery to an Optima or AGM. I went to the local auto parts store and was informed neither are made for the H3. I have seen several H4x4 off-road members with optimal or AGM batteries. Question how was this accomplished?
what size is the battery is Being used?

Most people either modify the stock box or just remove it altogether. I ran an AGM and just modified the stock box with a dremel, shaved some plastic here and there and presto.

As far as size, I think group 34? I can't remember, hopefully someone else will chime in.

I went with the Optima Yellow Top D34/78. If I am not mistaken the yellowtops are for running your rig + accessories. Redtop is just for running a vehicle and Bluetop is for marine applications. To install it I just took the battery cover off. Did a bit of dremel work to get it to fit into the base. Great battery. Hasn't died on me yet. Once nice feature is that it has two sets of terminals, so it will make wiring your accessories look a lot more clean. Also if needed, you can run a double battery setup with some creativity. What ever you go with, make sure it has enough CCA for running a winch. The X2O 10k that I run recommends 650 CCA.

This is how it looks on...and part number is 31M-pc2150...this is a deep cycle but they also offer the regular one...imho you are better off with the deep cycle.

If you are going to run a winch, you may want to consider a battery with both side and top posts. This will allow you to separately attach the winch power to the side posts while you have the traditional connections on the top.

Like has been said, you'll need to run without the cover, and you'll need to modify the base. I cut off the side of the base nearest to the fender wall.

Nice battery porn lol!
I've watched a number of videos on you tube dealing with the odyssey batteries and they seem like the cats meow.

Depending on the battery you might want to avoid using the side posts for winching, I've heard of some of the dual terminal ones the side posts cannot handle high amperage for sustained amounts of time.

As for replacement AGM, factory size is group 27 I think. You can get them but not from a local store. They'll only carry 34 and 31 and maybe a couple other really common sizes. Optima, Odyssey, East Penn, etc all make size 27 I think, but you have to order them.

Either go with a group 34 if you want stock-ish size, or a group 31 for more capacity. Group 34 are usually around 55 Ah, while group 31 are usually about 100 Ah. Or do a dual battery system with two group 34's, but that's more money than just getting a group 31 and having about the same capacity.

Since the battery is on the intake side there will be less heat over there, but I'd still put some kind of heat shield around the battery at least by the engine, excessive heat can reduce the life of the battery by a fair bit.

This is the same size as a group 27 except for the height, it is way taller.
This is as tall as you can get and still be able to shut the hood.
.... these photos are from the test fit and are a bit messy but I do t have anymore pics

How difficult is it to install dual battery?
Not too difficult at all, does require minor modification of the tray but can easily be done in less than a day. Search the forum for dual battery install and there are several members that have done it.

The hummer H3 reportedly comes with a group 86 (9.10 x 6.80 x 8.00") (230 x 173 x 203mm)....
This is the size that fits both of the H3's here at home. 06 & 07 No mods

Here is a link to a battery chart with all kinds of info...

I replaced my stock size with a group size 94R. It's a common Chrysler Dodge battery. I had to take the battery box out but it fits perfectly.

I noticed this pic doesn't have the strap to secure the battery - presumably it's just held by the base. Any reason you didn't use the strap?

You're kidding, right? You know that isn't a car battery.
