The issue is, the wheel width and tire width. It's the tire bulge that's causing the clearance issue. A 4.5 back spacing on 16 will fit, with a 9-10" wide wheel or a narrower tire. Amanda (a7xmustang) had the same issue and found out the hard way too. You won't be able run a 1/2" spacer with out switching out the wheel studs as there won't be enough threads for the lug nut

To add to previous post. The reason 17s with a 4.5" back spacing fit is because they are pretty much always 8.5-9" wide. This reduces the amount of tire bulge protruding into the control arm. It also moves the bulge ever so slightly up due to less sidewall. A 17x8 would have the same clearance issue with a 4.5" b/s and 12.5" wide tire. 4.5" WILL fit, but you would need to have a 9" or 10" wide rim. Or a 10.5-11.5" tire. If you want a 16x8 with 12.5" wide tire, you'll need a 4" or less back spacing

You'll most likely have to trim your studs flush with a 1" spacer. Unless the wheels you have, have pockets between they bolt holes in the back then you should be okay

Not much consolation but your not alone, I had the same problem when I put the Rancho on. Got everything done then went to put the new 16" front wheels on, wondered why they wouldn't snug down and took a look. Spent a good 20 minutes cursing everything in the known universe then called the local tire shop to see what they had in stock since it wasn't going anywhere on those.

Technically, Rancho is correct; a 16" with 4.5 backspace will fit IF you use a very narrow tire, I mean of course everyone lifts their rig and then puts bicycle tires on it. That would have been really handy to know beforehand as it was an expensive lesson learned. 5 16" Wheels 650.00 with 315 KO II's 1500.00 wound up selling them for 1k on clist to some really happy base H3 owner. Tire shop took an additional 3.3k for 20's with 37" Cooper STT's, which was the best combo, that wasn't chrome, that they had on hand that fit. Was a real joy hauling them one at a time in the wife's micro van 20 min each way.

Would have preferred 17's but these have grown on me and I don't even want to think of tires or wheels again for at least 40k miles. Hopefully I will have forgotten the great tire nightmare of 2016 by that time.

Drained all the trucks toy fund account for last year.

What didn't I do lately is the question? LOL we bought a 2008 H3 Alpha about 2 weeks ago with 99k miles. I'm doing an all aluminum radiator, hoses, external tranny cooler, waterpump, thermostat, power steering pump, tensioner pulley, front crankshaft seal, front crank/timing cover gasket, valve cover gaskets, upgraded battery terminals, new tail lights, HID headlights, LED fogs, LED interior lights, LED license plate light, front and rear diff fluid, transfer case fluid, transmission fluid and filter. LOL i think thats all of it!

oh and I did the sunroof drain mod and drilled out the tube.

If you call Headlight Revolution they usually have some discount going. Last set I got was 480 and beat the heck out of all the time trying to modify something that wasn't designed for hid.

I finally got some shackles put on. I used the supreme suspension ones. They're about an inch longer than rancho. It has fewer vibrations so I think my pinion angle was bad or something. It still might be a bit off.
