Encoder motor removed? Sensor wire disconnected? Strange, because we didn't have to remove that crossmember to get mine out or in.

Nothing difficult about it....done it many times. You have to remove the encoder motor, then twist it, and it will drop right down on your chest. Cake.

That's what I thought! But it doesn't seem to be able to go back far enough to clear those bolts. Should the transmission be supported or should that just be hanging? I'm wondering what I'm missing here. I remember dropping it twice and it wasn't this difficult.

believe it or not, I think you're right. Mine lost 2 links off the chain, one link go caught by the magnet, the other dropped into that lower gear and broke a tooth off. Yes, I want

Drop some "stop leak" into that Transfer Case and hit the trails lol.

I've seen plenty of Jeep Transfer Cases look like that when the Jeep was being flat towed and the shifter popped back into 4Lo or 4Hi... Big Boom for sure. My wife makes fun of me keeping misc parts, but when the poo hits the fan I normally can get it back up and running with my spare parts in no time.

What is the snubber?

It's that 2"x3" plate bolted to the inside of the case (see your photo). It's aluminum with a black nylon pad bonded to it. It's job (allegedly) is to help silence chain slap and keep the chain from rubbing a hole in the case, when it stretches and becomes loose.
These snubbers have a nasty habit of coming unbolted and causing havoc inside the case.

Was it this end that is circled?

What's the best remedy for this? The adapter plate and the Tatton driveshaft? Or try to go oem?

I heard oem is the way it is because it reduces the felt vibration.

Yes and yes. Got a Tatton and CJ's adapter. I'm rebuilding the tcase myself with spare parts (good thing I didn't sell my spare a few years back!). It also ripped up the transmission pan.
