Hey guys, I currently have an '03 H2, despite the problems I've had recently and the gas mileage, I love it to death. However, I feel like I need more, back when the H3 came out in 06 I leased one for a 2 years planning on making a switch from the H2 to her younger sister, but lack of space in the cabin made me change my mind.

Now I feel different, I think the more compact SUV, or H3T may suit my needs today.

1. What are some things I need to look for in an H3(T)?

2. Should I get a truck with aftermarket parts added or stock(I have the funds to upgrade if need be)?

3. Price range?

those are just some of the things that popped up in my head, thanks for the help!

1. Leather, Moonroof, Monsoon stereo are popular options. If you're an off-roader you might focus your search on the optional Adventure Package. If you like the muscle of the H2, then you should get an H3-Alpha. There really isn't much decrease in fuel consumption but, the V8 has WAY more torque than the base model 5-cylinder. If you want a stick-shift...they are out there but, only with the 5-cylinder. The early 2006 models have had issues with head-gaskets. Sunroof drains are a very common problem on all H3/H3Ts. Transfer-case and front axle issues are also very common and expensive to repair.

If you want the "T", you'll be forced into a 2009 or 2010 model...they were only made for about 18 months. T's are considerably longer and somewhat handicapped on tight trails, compared to the shorter SUV chassis. If you live in an urban area that requires tight parking, this could be an issue. The T's cargo-box is quite small, and if you truly want to haul something...I would suggest buying something else. Its fine for "antiquing" or the occasional "weekend project" type stuff...but it's the wrong vehicle if you want to haul gravel, dirt, furniture, or anything large. As far as "truck-duty" is concerned, I don't even think the H3T can hang with a Canyon, Toyota, or Nissan...and certainly not a full-size. On the bright side...its probably better than a Honda Ridgeline (yikes).

2. For reasons unknown to me...aftermarket parts for Hummers are pretty much limited to goofy chrome junk. Not only are most of these parts completely useless...they're often such poor quality that you would be better off with the factory parts they swapped out. For this reason, I highly suggest you buy a stocker, and then put on your own parts. Myself and few other small-time companies make REAL parts that matter. These are parts meant to improve the reliability and off-road ability, and most of the time you won't even know they are there. On the other hand...if you gotta have six plasma screens, 18" sub-woofers, and 24" wheels...have at it! You should have no problem finding one of these rolling eye-sores (try any NBA player).

3. Prices for H3's are falling fast. It depends on the area but around here...$9,000 to $16,000 is about it. Mileage is almost always over 60K. These are very high-maintenance vehicles, and you should take this in consideration when shopping. At 100K miles...the front end is usually very tired. The nice thing is you can completely freshen it up for around $1500-$2000...good for another 100K. H3T's prices are much higher...$18,000 to $25,000. Shocking considering what it is (and more importantly...what it isn't). The T-prices are entirely based on the limited production (less than 5000), and if you want to be in the club, its going to cost you.

Happy Hunting! When you find your soul mate...post up some pics!

You give up a lot of luxury going from the 2 to the 3...but my T is my favorite vehicle I have ever owned. Auto climate control and rain sensing wipers would be icing on the cake for me but I am doing fine without them.

Yeah hopefully the first year Canyon/Colorado will have V8 and locker options. The new Canyon looks awesome and I am not a GM fan at all.

I've found my 06 h3 to be a very low maintenance vehicle but it only has 93k on it. I hope it stays this way for at least another 50k. One thing to look for in my opinion is an Adventure package.

Three engine as of now and that's the I4, V6 and the I4 turbo diesel that will come in the 2016 models, I'm pretty sure you can tell which one I'm holding out for.

You mention a possible interest in a smaller, more maneuverable truck. I feel my 3T falls in the heavy-duty mid-size category. Good luck if you can find one since there was such a limited production run. The back diff is more heavy duty than a Colorado/ Canyon and includes disc brakes as well. If you check the stats a 3T is roughly the same size as a regular cab pickup that were built in the 70's. Full-size trucks have grown since then. I have no problem making U-turns and emergency maneuvers (without loss of control) when it was required. No way do I have the same options with my K1500 EC, but I save the big truck for the dirty work.
I had no problem pulling a trailer with an engine in the back of my truck hauling up the coast and climbing steep grades. It did the job; it just doesn't haul the volume of a bigger vehicle. That's the only drawback IMO.

The question about aftermarket parts is who installed them? Did the installer know what they were doing? How good quality are the parts?

If it was me, I'd be on the lookout for a low mileage completely stock truck and then go from there. I think there's a better chance of knowing what you get this way.

I've owned an H3 and an H3T. If I ever went back I would limit myself to an Alpha w/lockers. I find the I5 to be barely adequate, and I wouldn't even consider an '06 with the smaller I5 (no offence to '06 owners). I did run 35s on mine though, and that does affect power.

Be honest, if your bananatank was totaled and you had to buy another H3, wouldn't you go with an Alpha or at least an '07+?

That is some sound advice 4speedfunk. The only thing I would add,go find a 3 with adventure from a seller who doesn't know what they have.
how would I know if it has and adventure pack. and the dealer doesn't list it as such. how can I pick it out from the rest or what are some key things to look for?

Adv. Pak option will have electric locker buttons next to the t-case buttons. 06-08 will have rear only. 09-10 will have front and rear lockers. All AP models will have a 4:1 low range in the transfer case but, there is no visible difference. Also you look for ZM6 among the option codes.

Inside the glove box there is a sticker that lists all of the RPO (regular production order) codes. This sticker will show all the options, colors, trim packages, etc. it's basically the DNA Map of your truck. You can get all of codes off the internet. Code ZM6 (Adv. Pak) will appear toward the bottom.

Locker buttons far right on the 4x4 selectors 09 will have 2. Plus if they show a pic of the tire size from the factory the adventures come with 285's non adventures come with 265's
