Hayden 397 is the quick connect fitting to hose connector. These worked for me on the radiator connections. I found on the transmission end, they interfered with the transmission tunnel. If they made these in a 90 deg it would be perfect. I ended up crimping a 3/8" compression ferrule on cut lines and pushed the hose over that. Flaring should work just as well too.

Also, DO NOT unscrew the quick connect fitting that goes into the radiator. It holds the cooler in place and there is an oring on the inside. I made this mistake and the oring had swollen and would not go back in place. It was not a standard size oring either. Found a metric one that mostly fit but I had to make a hook to pull the cooler back in place with a blind oring and very short fittings to get the threads to engage. Use a small screwdriver and pop the retaining clips out to remove the line if you need to.

I won't be cutting mine; want to get fittings. Then if needed I can just go back to the original setup

Mike

You can do that? I wanted to but couldnt find fittings for it so I thought I would have to go cut and flare lines?

Only fittings I found were the ones that went into the OEM rad to connect rubber hoses to them.

Yah I think so. Replicate the fitting to the radiator, instead of threaded it can be barbed to go to the hose.

I'll be watching for that info as well.

Thanks for doing the Leg work boys!

When the temps are like they are today -29*C (-20*F) I am not worried about getting an over heated Tranny.... I am however worried about cross contamination of the stock cooler and would like to separate the system for piece of mind!

Id say you want a 180 degree stat and its cheaper!

I kinda regret not going with a 180 due to price but I know my transmission...It runs hot and 160 is probably better.

Since Portager had his fail and needed a tranny rebuild, I decided its time to stop procrastinating and get this done. Thanks Chris for moving forward on this and spurring me to do the same!!

I'm with RamRod. I don't think I have so much of an issue with cooling as much but I don't wanna risk the transmission to a radiator failure... The issue with how to connect on to the transmission lines has me stumped too... I just got a trans flush like a month ago so I really don't want to lose a bunch of the fluid/conditioner they just put in. Is it a no no to let it drain into a clean container and reuse it?

I finally installed my cooler. All mounted and lines ran. Just need to hook it up but my thermostat needs an adapter for the lines I need to order. All the hard work of removing the grille and crap is done!

So far the hottest temp I've seen is 193 climbing the mountain out of Garlock one morning, ambient temp was 35f. It cools off quickly though. Mostly runs in the 170's. Coolant temp pretty much stays at 200f.

Glad to hear! Cooling off quick is a big pro. That was a major problem with the oem setup they took forever to cool off after hitting a grade

I'm digging this thread up since I'm about to do this now. Got my bypass valve and gonna order that derale cooler. Looking at Casey's setup and thinkin about doing the same thing. Using the supplied hardware to mount it straight to the front of the condenser.... Do I need to pull the radiator to do that?

I mounted mine up without pulling the rad. I just took off the grille and put it in there. I am glad I didnt go any bigger then the one I have. If I did I would of had to move things around. I have an external speaker mounted up and it would of been a PITA. Mine is just behind the grille next to the radiator support and the stock OEM horn.

Did you lose any trans fluid when you added the cooler? If it ever warms up, ill get mine done

mine came with zipties are used those. My OEM horn kinda blocks the top part but I didnt want to move my external speaker and I also figured its better then I had it. A winch blocking a small inline rad.

I am not sure ask poncho choas254. I ordered the wrong size barb for my thermostat and have a new one coming. according to tracking it will be here saturday, everything else is already hooked up I just have to put on the trans cooler lines to the rubber hose and I am good to go.

Cool. I ordered the derale and a 180 bypass valve. Gotta go pick up a flaring tool. I'm gonna get rid of the short pieces of oem tubing and make my connections right there under the oil filter where the hard lines attach to those rubber sections. One of those rubber sections is leaking right now. I'll probably fashion a clamp to hold the bypass valve against the crossmember there. Do I need to pull the bumper AND the grill?

That's a great idea DW! I have a seeping hose there but will have to address it at some point. You will be fine just pulling the grill. Chaos, you lose a bit of fluid, I capped my lines to keep it at a minimum. Still added tranny fluid, but it was probably only half a quart.

For what is worth, I'm running the Hayden 678. I am having an issue with my torque converter not locking up so I disabled it. Hottest temp I've seen on the transmission is 168 even with the torque converter not locked up at highway speeds. I am plumbed in series with the radiator cooler. My radiator temps are probably a bit cooler than everyone else though. All this and I am also not running a radiator fan yet either :)

I can relate. I have an electric fan clutch, and the only time it engages is during summer when the AC is running. Even then it's the AC high side pressure switch that turns the fan on, not engine temps.

and the story finally comes to a close! I had routed it all 2 nights ago. It was 1am and I left the trans cooler lines in the oem radiator. Yesterday I am at work (outside covering a lunch at the costco gas station and I park in front of the gas station) and I see a man taking pictures of squeaky. I go up to him and we start talking, luckily I saw him because when I went to talk to him I saw fluid on the ground...I currently have no leaks so afterwords I check it out and its orange! **** its dexcool....

So seeing I didnt finish my trans cooler I avoided the possibility of cross contamination. I got a free tow home thanks to AAA. This morning before class I pull the trans cooler lines and luckily nothing came out orange or mixed or discolored. So I proceeded to finish my trans cooler. I checked for leaks and I do not believe I have any but I have fluid on the ground everytime I stop. Its a combonation of left over trans fluid in the oem cooler and part dex cool in the other spot from the leak.

I leave for king of the hammers tomorrow afternoon. Zach is overnighting me a new radiator and supposedly I am the guinea pig for it, its a manual trans one they may break less lol.

So I will be installing it and leaving and coming back sunday. Hopefully no breakdowns but it will be a good test.

Today on the drive to class I hit 172 max! Much better!!!! yesterday I hit 198. So a 28 degree improvement. I average at 167 but hit a max of 172. I am soooo happy with the setup. Again I will watch for leaks but it may be the left over dripping from the oem internal trans cooler. Its tough to tell with a leaking rad and the mess from my new setup.

Glad to hear it's working... How warm have the temps been out there? Im curious if the derale cooler will provide enough cooling with temps upwards of 80-90 degrees. Im curious to see what I'd average with a 180 deg bypass valve.
