Why does my H3 go better offroad when in AWD than when I put it in 4WD locked?

I do not have a locking rear diff option either. Will be getting one in the near future.

Thanks in advanced

It doesn't , AWD is ~60% rear bias. 4wd locked is splitting 50/50 font and rear.but u only locking transfer case so TC needs to kick in for left to right power split.

Speaking of the t-case..... There's a N (neutral?) In between the 4hi and 4hi lock. Why would you want a the t-case in neutral and how do I get it there?

Well I tried to get up a somewhat muddy trail and it wouldn't make it in 4WD LOCKED, but when I put it in AWD it went right up the dang thing.

Im not sure if I have a plastic shift fork or not I've heard a lot about them but never though I had any trouble. I can fill it lock into 4 low but it still seems to send more power to the rear wheels.
I do have a 2006 though... I hope my trans isnt screwed... Whats the best way to find out? Just take it apart?

:gaah:

I'll have to let someone else chime in on that.... Im not positive on how to test it. I too have an 06 and will be pulling my t-case to replace the shift fork...

Transfercases having neutral is handy for towing and also allowing you to shift the transmission into gear depending on the vehicle.

On my H1, I can shift between high and high lock without stopping, but to use low lock I have to put the transmission in neutral and then shift the tcase from LL->N->H-HL. on a number of 4x4's with transfer cases you need neutral for towing.

Yeah thats what ive read too. Anyway, neutral disengages the transfer case from the transmission. As I recall, you first set the truck to park, then hold the 4HI and 4LO lock buttons until the transfer case switches to neutral. Then set transmission to drive/reverse to check if the procedure worked (ur trans should shift to D/R but no movement). Reversing it is the same procedure.

I heard if you tow the vehicle without the t-case in neutral, you'll ruin it?

If you tow the truck without engine running, the trans oil pump wnt be working and pumping oil to the trans. As the truck is being towed, the trans will move and get really hot, and the oil inside it will burn. Eventually, hot trans and no oil ----> possible damage

A good way to test if 4-HI-Lock is working is in a parking lot making tight turns. You should feel the front wheels bind since the t-case is forcing the front wheels to turn at the same speed as the rears.

You will really notice it!

On a tight turn in 4-HI-lock on pavement it can even cause you to stop!.... doing this on pavement it never good... but sometimes you bump it into that position... and you learn what it does lol

I read the thread from 06-H3 about Squeaky gettin a 4:1 t-case. Is anyone familiar with the method of jacking up the entire vehicle and seeing how the tires rotate in the different modes?

It is all the same. Jack up the 4 tires off the ground then put it in 4 hi unlocked put in drive. The tires should spin if u put your hands to stop the front the there should be no resistance.

Now try it in 4 hi locked do the same if you stop the front tires the rear should stop too as they are locked together.

Same goes for 4 lo locked.

All time 4x4 with the H3, power is ALWAYS going to both front and rear axles. AWD Power goes to Front, Rear, or both axles depending on what the computer says.

This is not some flashy, I put a Z71 sticker on my vehicle so it not must be off-road capable. As much as I begin to dislike what GM did / does to most vehicles, this truck is unique and true to the other Hummer brand drivetrains.

And to make sure your 4WD system is working properly jack it up and put it in 4 hi locked. all tires shuld be spinning when you stop the front the rear should stop because its locked

If not, its broke!

Wait, now I am confused. When I had pass. side half shaft explode in CV joint.

In Unlocked truck is not moving at all, but you can see broken shaft turning.
in Hi locked truck will move fine.

No front locker.
