Just when we decided to taking the hummer on a 8000km road trip next summer my T has been acting up and I can't figure out the issue... I have been looking at the Toyota site a lot lately... someone talk some sense into me before I do something stupid!

I have a 2007 Tacoma black 4x2 V6 crew cab auto that I'll trade straight up. Makes perfect sense to me.:)

The "stuff" I've been thinking about is life after the H3. Once I passed 200K I've basically accepted I could have a catastrophic failure of some kind which will force me to make the decision on whether to fix it or get something new. There isn't much out there that I would prefer to drive over my H3. I'm leaning increasingly to simply doing an engine swap vs. getting a new ride when the time comes. Even though I am in Michigan and we have lots of road salt, wash it off regularly and it is garaged at home and at work so most everything is still in great shape.

I have had it 7 years this month and the only other thing I enjoy driving as much is my 72 VW Bus.

I test drove a Toyota Tacoma but my head hit the top at 6 ft 3 so that is out of the question. Plus new vehicles are so much money you could rebuild your entire H3 for just the down payment on a new Tahoe or Suburban...

So true.. and they depreciate a lot within their first few years of life.

I bought my h3 with 46k miles on it for about half the cost it was when new. And it still had roughly 1/4 of its useful life left.

This is guessing it's useful life is at least 200k miles.

That's the truth. Or even a new Colorado ZR2. I could put 7-9K in it and drive it for another 250K

Like you GBuster, mine was a prior lease that had 35k on it and it was between 1/3 - 1/2 of the new price.

I haven't dropped in here in a while and I was surprised to see so many of the same people still here. H3's stick around like a case of the H3rpes.

That's what I tell everybody when they hear me talking about repairing this or replacing that on my H3 and ask why don't I just trade in and buy new. It's way cheaper to repair or replace then it would be to buy new.

I am currently working on a 2007 H3 replacing the entire suspension front and rear. I am going to add a Truetrac to his rear also. While I am down there too I am cleaning up the rust and underbody coating it. It already has a new trans. I changed the oil and transfer case fluid so he is ready to go for another 100k miles without issues. He is running 33" tires so less stress and no issues with the 4:56 gears. When I am done with his I have another one waiting in the alley for the same thing.

Sounds fun. So is there a trick to replacing those lower control arm bushings? Or is it just a total PITA?

I remove both sides of the suspension and drop the front axle. Then you can get to the inside of it to push it out. It is still a real PITA but having the right tools helps to make it not so bad. The first time I did this on my own it was 12 hours or so with a lot of cleaning up and rust proofing. This second one for a custom has turned into a nightmare with the torsion bar being stuck off set into the hex end of the lower control arm. I had to cut the lower control arm out and order a brand new one. He already ordered my Skyfall Off Road Torsion bars so that was not an issue. I am about 20 hours into this one with a lot of rust clean up and coating also. I think the third one now that he is using all new parts for the entire suspension front and rear it should be maybe 8 hours worth of work. I charge $100 an hour for labor at my place.

That really sounds like a total PITA. Did you upgrade any of the diff bushings as well?

Is anyone else bothered by the huge blind spot the H3 has? I have the mirrors pivoted a few inches past body visibility on both sides and can still fit an 8 wheeler in my blind spot.

Yesterday I cut off a garbage truck, it was invisible bumper to bumper.

I find if I line up the side mirrors so there is very little overlap with the rear view mirror, it eliminates the blind spots.

There is something to be said for always checking over your shoulder, I rarely rely solely on mirrors.

I have the little circular ones in the bottom outside corner of my mirrors. I struggle more with the A-pillar blind spots. Pretty sure i gave a lady a heartattack because i almost ran over her one night in a cross walk.

Worse than that for me is the blind spot from the rear-view mirror. That thing hides cars like nobody's business. Best mod I ever did was moving the rear-view mirror up 1.5" when I replaced the windshield. Now it is at least tolerable.

That's actually the first thing I noticed when I went to drive the H3. I expected blind spots but it wasn't really too bad, the new camaro is much worse. But that rear-view mirror covers up oncoming cars when going around certain turns in my area. I'll move it up eventually...

Can anyone recommend a good back up camera? I'm thinking about a flush mount in the bumper kinda like the factory ones. I would also like to get a dash camera.

Haha I could thing if a few Jeepers who would actually buy that if they made it available at 4Wheel Parts!
